This year has seen a strong property market in the South Lakes, a ripple effect of a successful six months of property sales in the Barrow and Dalton markets.
The increase in job opportunities in the Barrow-in-Furness area due to the ‘Choose South Cumbria’ campaign – an initiative to promote living and working in the area – is having a positive effect on Kendal and other towns across the South Lakes region. Buyers are choosing the South Lakes to settle and travelling to the Furness area to work.
Houses are achieving closer to their asking price than previously, with the average price for a semi-detached property in the LA9 region selling for £207,478. This is up by 3.99% on last year’s prices.

We are seeing a wide range of purchasers, including some buy-to-let investors, because Kendal always has a shortage of rental stock. Terraced houses have seen an increase in popularity but semi-detached properties are still the most saleable properties in the region. Buyers are looking to invest in a property that can accommodate a family and are looking for features such as gardens, garages and off road parking.
There is still a stock shortage across the whole area and in all types of properties. We’re finding that while sales are good and properties on the market are attracting viewings and offers, sellers seem reluctant to commit to marketing their property.
