It’s not hard to understand why Brits often choose to go abroad for their beach holidays. Warm sea air, balmy evening walks, and swims without a wetsuit are just some of the attractions.
Holidaymakers return revitalised and relaxed. However, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, living on Britain’s coastline can also be just as refreshing.
Researchers from the European Centre for Environment and Human Health at the University of Exeter analysed the data of more than 48 million people in the UK, to assess how a person’s geographical location might affect their health. They found that the nearer people lived to the coast, the more likely they were to report good health within that past year. So today, OnTheMarket.com looks at five properties located on the UK’s most stunning coastlines.
1. Fort Green, Aldeburgh, Suffolk (£1,200,000 Savills, Ipswich)
Sea views: The house is set back on the beach with views of the sea and River Alde
Period character: The house features a fully vaulted drawing room and original wood beams
Actually situated on the beach, the first property couldn’t be much closer to the sea. First constructed in 1824, The Old Mill House has four bedrooms and is located in one of the most popular locations in Aldeburgh, with panoramic views over the sea and the River Alde. Spread over three main sections in a central tower, the house is in need of some renovation but has brilliant potential and the option to extend to create further accommodation. The house enjoys a private garden that leads directly onto the beach. Other features of the property include: a courtyard, garage, and private parking.

Baywatch: The house looks out onto miles of unobstructed views of the beach
The next property will float any potential buyer’s boat. This very spacious Georgian house is located in Overstrand, a village known for its beautiful stretches of sandy beaches; it is often referred to as the “village of millionaires”, because at the turn of the century, politicians and artists spent their summers in the nearby villas. Cliffside House was designed by the prominent architect, Edward Boardman and is steeped in history. It comprises four reception rooms, a master suite with dressing room and bathroom, and four further bedrooms. The kitchen is equipped with state of the art appliances and an Aga. The garden extends over 1.5 acres and includes an orchard, Wendy house and a paved terrace.

Open space: The house has 10 acres of land
Private road: This scenic pathway leads to the coastline
Greshornish House sits in a secluded magical seaside setting at the end of a single track road, surrounded by gardens and a belt of beautiful trees. The remote and unspoiled Greshornish peninsula is in a superb location on the Isle of Skye. Residents can wander the property’s 10 acres of gardens and grounds, or spot eagles and otters from the shoreline. The interior is comfortable and well designed. The panelled entrance hall leads off to the drawing room, billiard room and morning room/lounge bar. In 2006 the Victorian kitchens were converted into the current dining room, connected to the main house with a sun room and pantry service extension. The main bedrooms are on the first floor and comprise six en suite bedrooms, one of which was the former Georgian drawing room, and another large music room with an impressive high ceiling. There are two further en suite bedrooms on the second floor and two smaller bedrooms approached from a rear staircase, both of which have small en suite bathrooms.
