Before exploring the key things first time buyers need to consider, we started this series by covering the homebuying process, from organising your finances through to completion of the transaction when they keys are finally in hand, but how does the rental process differ?

This episode covers just that and outlines how renting a property compares to buying one.

To share their expertise on the rental market, we’re joined by two special guests, Sophie Durkin, Regional Lettings Director at Portico, and TV presenter, finance and property expert, Tayo Oguntonade.

While owning a home is a common aspiration for many movers hoping to get on the property ladder, renting is an alternative which shouldn’t be overlooked. Everyone’s circumstances and motivations for moving are different, so with this in mind, we discuss the reasons that can make renting a suitable option, as well as some of the benefits that can come with it, such as lower barriers to entry and greater flexibility.

If you do choose to rent, it’s important to understand deposits, so we dive into the detail surrounding them and shed a light on deposit guarantees as well as alternatives to deposits to keep on your radar.

To make sure you’re familiar with the roles of different people involved in the rental process, we also outline the differences between what letting agents and landlords are responsible for, too.

Finally, before bringing the discussion to a close, we answer some common renting FAQs during our Q&A segment. To help prospective renters feel better prepared, we share our thoughts on good questions to ask when you’re being shown around a property, how to make yourself stand out as a potential tenant in a busy rental market where there’s lots of competition, tips for splitting bills when renting with multiple people, how to maintain a good relationship with your landlord, and the all important red flags to look out for when viewing a home to name just a few talking points.
