The Crystal Palace was a cast-iron and plate-glass building originally erected to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. At the time it was the largest amount of glass ever used in a building and it astonished visitors with its clear walls and ceilings that did not require interior lights, thus a “Crystal Palace”. The name Crystal Palace came from the playwright Douglas Jerrold. On 13 July 1850 he referred to a “palace of very crystal”, a name that was subsequently picked up and repeated even though the building had not yet been approved. The East London Line was added in 2010 and has proved to be a massive selling point for the area. The heart and hub of Crystal Palace is The Triangle, so nicknamed by its residents, which has now become a talking point for miles around.
