Why Crystal Palace?
The Crystal Palace was a cast-iron and plate-glass building originally erected to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. At the time it was the largest amount of glass ever used in a building and it astonished visitors with its clear walls and ceilings that did not require interior lights, thus a “Crystal Palace”.
The name Crystal Palace came from the playwright Douglas Jerrold. On 13 July 1850 he referred to a “palace of very crystal”, a name that was subsequently picked up and repeated even though the building had not yet been approved.
Crystal Palace has fantastic connections into London Bridge and Victoria as well as surrounding areas. The East London Line was added in 2010 and has proved to be a massive selling point for the area.
The heart and hub of Crystal Palace is The Triangle, so nicknamed by its residents, which has now become a talking point for miles around. The vast array of facilities inside the triangle include numerous restaurants with flavours from around the world, bars, bakeries, pubs and antique dealers.
