Location

Airlie House is situated close to the small village of Dykehead, at the foot of Glen Clova and Glen Prosen, just to the south of Tulloch Hill on which sits the Airlie Monument. Glen Clova and Glen Prosen are two of the most picturesque Angus Glens which reach deep into the Grampian Mountains. Glen Prosen has been described as an unspoilt backwater, while Glen Clova is noted as being steep, craggy and dominant with great scooped hanging corries ringed by cliffs. At the head of the glen is Glen Doll. The whole area is renowned for its rich diversity of flora and fauna and the upper part of these glens lie within the Cairngorms National Park.
Airlie House is ideally placed for those who wish to enjoy the range of locally available outdoor pursuits. The spectacular scenery offers ample opportunity for walking and mountaineering. Jock’s Road, a well known track through the hills to Braemar, begins in Glen Doll. There are further routes north to Loch Muick and through Glen Clova and Glen Prosen. Fishing may be taken on the River South Esk. Golf courses in the area include Kirriemuir, Alyth, Rosemount at Blairgowrie, and Carnoustie. Other pursuits include loch fishing at Lintrathen, skiing at Glenshee in the winter months and riding, which is available locally. Low and high ground shooting can be taken on local estates. Other local attractions include Loch of Kinnordy Nature Reserve and Glamis Castle and there are pleasant sandy beaches at Lunan Bay, St Cyrus and Montrose.
There is a primary school at Cortachy with secondary schooling at Webster’s High School in Kirriemuir, which is an attractive town only some 5 miles from the A90 dual carriageway, allowing easy access to both Aberdeen and the north and to Dundee and the south. It is the birthplace of J M Barrie, author of Peter Pan, who gifted the nearby Camera Obscura to the town. It has a good array of independent shops and a supermarket, plus leisure, business and community facilities. Forfar, the county town, has a wide range of services including a new sports and leisure centre. Dundee provides all that is expected of a major city with two universities and renowned cultural facilities, including the V&A museum. Private schooling is available at Dundee High School with a dedicated bus service from Forfar. Other private schools include St Leonards, Strathallan and Glenalmond, as well as Craigclowan in Perth and Kilgraston. There is a railway station at Dundee with main line services, including a sleeper to London. Aberdeen and Edinburgh airports provide a range of domestic and international flights, and there is a service from Dundee to Heathrow. Journey times to Aberdeen have been much reduced by the Western Peripheral Route. Armstrongs at Roundyhill, the Strathmore Arms at Glamis and the Drovers Inn at Memus are well known local restaurants.

If coming from Dundee, head north on the A90 and then turn onto the A928 to Kirriemuir. From Kirriemuir take the B955, signposted to the Glens, north to Dykehead. In Dykehead take the second turning on the left, signposted for a telephone box, onto a lane called The Clash, passing a row of cottages on the right. This lane becomes an estate track. Continue up the hill and Airlie House will be seen on the left, with the entrance being at the end of the hedge. If coming from the north on the A90, some 6 miles south of Brechin, at Finavon, turn off onto the B957 signposted for Tannadice and Noranside. After passing through Tannadice turn right signposted Memus and Cortachy. After a mile continue straight over the junction and then turn left signposted Memus and Kirriemuir. After 1.7 miles turn right signposted Memus and Cortachy. Continue for 3 miles, passing through Memus and Cortachy, and turn right signposted Dykehead, Prosen and Clova. In Dykehead proceed as above.
