Description

Cuil Cottage is a picturesque cottage dating back to the 16th century, set back from the banks of Loch Awe.

The accommodation on the ground floor begins with the entrance hall with sitting room, kitchen and main bathroom off. The cosy sitting room has a wood burning stove and full height patio doors leading out to the gardens.

The light and bright kitchen is well equipped with a range of high and low level cabinetry, along with a Rayburn range cooker and space for dining table. Stairs lead from the kitchen up to two charming double bedrooms. Each bedroom has vaulted ceilings, windows overlooking the gardens and access to in-built storage.

A one bedroom annexe adjoins the main accommodation, complete with shower room and utility space. Ladder steps lead to a floored attic room offering flexible space which is currently set up as an office.

Cuil Cottage sits within its own gardens, mainly laid to lawn with mature trees and shrubs and with a pretty stepping stone pathway and paved patio with outside table and chairs. Around the side of the property there is an elevated deck offering further opportunity to relax amongst the peaceful surroundings, and an additional garden shed and separate wood store. On the other side of the road is handy parking space for multiple vehicles.

Cuil Cottage has access rights to Loch Awe through the neighbouring land to launch a boat. There is an additional boat, trailer and outboard engine available by further negotiation.

Location

Kilchrenan is a quiet village reached by a seven mile long minor road and is a secluded area of great peacefulness and beauty. It has a primary school and a church, and the village is served by an excellent gastropub, the Kilchrenan Inn, which offers accommodation alongside a bar and restaurant. There are two notable hotels on the lochside – the Taychreggan and the Ardanaiseig – both of which cater for the upper end of the market and have good restaurants.

Taynuilt, on the main road to Oban, has a post office, grocer/delicatessen, butcher and petrol station and has a railway station on the Glasgow – Oban train line. Oban (21 miles) is the nearest major town and is the ferry terminal to the Western Isles. The town has a full range of shops, supermarkets and restaurants.

Loch Awe is a spectacular loch and is the longest freshwater loch in Scotland, running from the village of Lochawe to Ford near the west coast to the south – a distance of 23 miles. Argyll offers the opportunity for a fantastic range of outdoor activities. There is fantastic hill walking, climbing and mountaineering in the area with skiing at Aonach Mhor and at Glen Coe.

Additional Info

Cuil Cottage is said to date from the 16th century, originally as part of the settlement of Barbreck which is mentioned in parish records in 1510. It would then have been a ‘byre-dwelling’ or "long-house" for tenant farmers. The walls of the cottage are original from that time.

In the 19th and early 20th century, Cuil Cottage was owned by the lairds of Barbreck, then the Campbell and McArthur families. It served latterly as the gardener’s cottage and was then named "Rose Cottage" before being separated out to form its own land in 1926.
