This wonderful home forms part of an imposing terrace designed and built in 1841 by the renowned architect Thomas Ellis Owen (1805-1862), who was responsible for much of the master planning and development of this part of Southsea, now preserved within the Owen Conservation Area. Reputedly this home was built for Owen’s father so benefits from additional external plaster embellishments. and Queen Victoria stayed next door on her travels from London to Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. These villas, terraces and houses were built for professionals in the ‘villa suburb’ style popular at this time and following in the footsteps of John Nash’s 'Park Villages' in Regents Park, London c1820-30. Today, this home offers the new owner the opportunity to undertake a ‘light refurbishment’ to put their own mark on this beautiful, historic property.
Upon entering the property, the visitor will wonder at the light, scale and quality of the internal accommodation. With 9ft ceiling heights, extensive ornate cornicing and plaster work, beautiful fireplaces, an historic staircase serving all floors, timber doors and African Mahogany timber floors in principal reception rooms, much of the original details remain intact.
On the ground floor, there are 3 reception rooms and a fully fitted kitchen with the rear drawing room opening out onto a balcony with steps leading down to the private courtyard garden. The staircase leads down to the lower ground floor which benefits from good quality natural light, an extensive and fully fitted kitchen with a traditional gas Aga Range and a single contemporary electric Aga Range, 2 reception rooms, a fully fitted shower room, and a utility room with rear access to the courtyard garden. The first and second floors are each configured similarly with 3 double bedrooms and a fully fitted bathroom per floor. This home makes for the most fantastic home for large-scale entertainment with friends and families.
The extensive and private rear courtyard garden provides a place to relax and entertain removed from the bustling centre of Southsea. Additionally, there is a rear vehicle access from Sussex Road to the courtyard for additional car parking.
If you are looking for a beautiful, historic and sizeable family home, located in arguably the best part of Southsea, which you can make your own through ‘light and sympathetic refurbishment’, then we strongly recommend you call us to arrange a viewing.
Location:
Southsea is a seaside resort and within the geographic area of Portsmouth and Portsea Island. The town is located 1.8 miles (2.8 km) to the south of Portsmouth's inner city centre. Southsea began as a fashionable 19th-century Victorian seaside resort named Croxton Town, after a Mr Croxton who owned much of the surrounding land. As the resort grew, it adopted the name 'Southsea' from nearby Southsea Castle, a seafront fort constructed in 1544 to help defend the Solent and Portsmouth Harbour.
Steeped in history, there is always something to see and do in Southsea. The pier is a popular location for a spot of fishing or entertainment with its various gaming arcades, and extensive pebble beach. Clarence Pier has a seasonal fairground and a lovely seafront walk along the seawall towards historic Old Portsmouth, Spice Island, Gunwharf Quays, the naval dockyards and the Mary Rose Museum. Southsea Common is home to the multi-award-winning Victorious Festival, an annual music festival attracting top-name music artists and comedy stars. Fancy a spot of shopping? Albert Road and Palmerston Road boasts a selection of independent retail shops and restaurants/bars providing a lively social scene. And there is a choice of good local schools.
