Every day that Manuel pulls into the driveway of Fernfield Farm Cottages, he feels the weight of the world lift from his shoulders. The impressive property has been his home for 17 years now and throughout all that time it has remained a peaceful haven away from the hustles and bustles of daily life. “When I come in through those gates, then close them behind me, I realise I am in my own little corner of heaven,” he enthuses. “It is so tranquil here and there are such lovely views; it really is very special. I grew up in the city and so to live somewhere like this now is just wonderful. I can go for walks along the canal or through the bluebell woods yet I can also pick up major roads to London and get into Milton Keynes very quickly. It really is a very unique home.”

Rooms

COTTAGE DREAM
Dating back to 1901, the property is believed to have once been part of a farm. In the time he has been there, Manuel has upgraded the main house and created a separate, self-contained, two-bedroom cottage. This has its own sitting room, kitchen breakfast room and conservatory downstairs, as well as a ground-floor bedroom and shower room. Up on the first floor, there is another splendid bedroom, with a balcony and and generous en suite shower room. “We converted the former garage and office building into the cottage when my wife’s parents retired. This enabled them to come and live with us while also remaining independent,” he explains. “It was ideal for this purpose but could also be let out or make great guest accommodation.”

FLEXIBLE LIVING
The main property is entered via a useful lobby or boot room where walking boots and wellies can be slipped off and jackets and coats hung. This leads on into an inner hall, with access to a cloakroom and the sizeable utility room. “There is also an office and sitting room here – although these rooms could have a variety of uses to suit the requirements of whoever lives here next. They could be ideal as a children’s playroom or family room perhaps.” The kitchen, with its contemporary, black, high-gloss units and wooden work surfaces, sits at the heart of the house, where it adjoins the dining room. “This has worked very well as it makes entertaining extremely easy,” he adds.

WILDLIFE WATCHING
The dining room opens into a long conservatory, which enjoys views out over the gardens and countryside beyond. This in turn leads on to the garden and into the generous sitting room. “I love spending time in the conservatory,” says Manuel. “It was added at the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020 and was wonderful through all the lockdowns. It faces south and has underfloor heating, which makes it cosy in the colder months. In the summer, it is lovely to sit in there with both sets of garden doors open. I sometimes see deer and pheasants when I am in there.”

ENTERTAINING SPACE
The main sitting room is a large space, which stretches from the front to back of the house. This is a wonderful family room that has also come into its own for parties and celebrations. “There is so much space downstairs – there is always somewhere to go if you want to close a door and enjoy some quiet time, but it also works very well when there are lots of visitors here. We have had parties with up to 40 people in the house, as well as barbecues, with people coming in and out. On one occasion, we also had a marquee out in the garden.”

A SPECIAL FIND
Upstairs, the exceptional flexibility of the property continues. The family bathroom is up here and there are also five bedrooms, three of which are double in size. “We always used the smallest one as a study,” he observes. The master suite is the jewel in the crown of the whole house. This enormous space features a bank of built-in wardrobes and a large en suite shower room. “The bedroom opens on to a balcony where you can sit on sunny mornings with a cup of coffee just gazing out over the countryside,” he says. Manuel will miss the property, from its beautiful gardens and fishpond to its incredible surroundings. There is plenty of space to grow fruit and vegetables or keep chickens and the driveway can accommodate several vehicles. “It has been everything I hope it would be,” he admits. “It was so easy for me to travel into London to work – and to have this place to return home to at the end of the day, with open fields on three sides, has been just magical.”
