Superbly restored terraced house on iconic street

Description

14 South Castle Street dates from 1820 and is a traditional, stone built, terraced house, with a symmetrical front façade. The garden façade, which faces west, has a raised roofline and extensions comprising the dining area and family room.

The house has been well maintained by the present owners and is decorated to a very high standard with a modern kitchen and bathrooms. The front windows are by Mozolowski & Murray. It is deceptively spacious at 1,670 ft2 and is well laid out for modern occupation. Three of the four bedrooms have en suite bath or shower rooms. There is also a shower room downstairs beside the family room which can be used as an overflow bedroom.

The entrance vestibule gives access to the hall with stairs up to the first floor. The sitting room has a wooden floor, fireplace with solid fuel stove, a built in cupboard and a hatch with ladder to a cellar below. To the rear is a hallway with a glazed door to the garden. Off this is the family room and a shower room.

The kitchen on the other side of the hall is open plan to the dining room which has glazed double doors to a patio outside. The kitchen has high quality wooden units with a Rangemaster cooker, Belfast sink, Bosch dishwasher, Siemens American-style fridge freezer and Hotpoint washing machine. There is a walk in, under stair store.

On the first floor is a landing with two bedrooms off. Bedroom 1 has an en suite bathroom and built in wardrobe. Bedroom 2 has an en suite shower room, off which is the boiler cupboard.

On the second floor is a landing / reading area and two further bedrooms. There are inner and outer doors to bedroom 3 which means that the shower room can either be used as an en suite or shared with bedroom 4.

Garden
An important feature of the property is its west facing, walled garden. This is backed by gardens off North Street and Market Street meaning it is a quiet place which catches the afternoon sun.

The garden has a paved terrace outside the dining room and a wide paved pathway. Either side are flat lawns. There is a wooden garden shed in the corner.

Location

South Castle Street has a prime setting in central St Andrews. It is a narrow street of period houses which links to Market Street at the south end and to North Castle Street opposite, which has the ruins of St. Andrews Castle at its the end. St. Andrews Castle is on The Scores which is the cliff top street leading to the West Sands Beach. The property is within ½ mile of the harbour and the East Sands beach.

The University of St Andrews is one of the oldest in Britain (founded in 1413). St Salvator’s Chapel and St Salvator’s Quadrangle, where many University functions take place are on North Street. All the shops, pubs and restaurants in North Street, South Street and Market Street are close at hand.

St Andrews is renowned worldwide as the ‘Home of Golf’. There are seven golf courses under the management of the St Andrews Links Trust, including the Old Course, which played host to the 150th Open Championship in July. There are many other golf courses in the area including the Duke’s Course, St Andrews Bay, Kingsbarns, and Dumbarnie and traditional links courses at Elie and Crail.

The historic town has a good range of shops, hotels, restaurants and recreational and cultural facilities which include a cinema and The Byre Theatre. Beyond St Andrews is the East Neuk of Fife, with a spectacular coastline which boasts fishing villages built around picturesque harbours and sandy unspoilt beaches.

Access to St Andrews by rail, road and air is good. Leuchars railway station (6 miles) is on the main Aberdeen to London line and provides a fast link to Dundee and Edinburgh. Edinburgh Airport, with a wide range of domestic and international flights, is 50 miles away and Dundee Airport is 15 miles.

Ofcom has tested the actual coverage provided in various locations around the UK to help ensure that these predictions are reasonable. The values shown against a property can be broken down as follows:

Clear: No bars, no signal predicted

Amber: Two bars, may experience problems with connectivity
