- Important example of ancient woodland
Elder Wood makes up part of the much larger Withmale Park Wood, identified as an important example of ancient woodland.
From the main entrance the private track leads up between fields and woodland until you pass over a stream that borders the wood at the south west corner. The wood as a whole has a very quiet, secluded feel, ideal for nature lovers. Kites, buzzards and owls are often seen. The boundaries are open between the adjacent woodlands and the farmland to allow wildlife to move freely.
Impressive oak stand throughout Elder Wood, mature ash are also common. Hazel coppice and field maple make up much of the understory and bluebells and wild garlic carpet the woodland floor in season. There are numerous internal pathways in and around the wood, while quite dense in places it's easily navigable. There is also a large clearing and internal track for woodland activities on the eastern side.
Because this woodland has been designated as ancient, it is protected as a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and as such is a wood that forms part of our national heritage.
The woodland is situated only 10 miles from Northampton and just a short drive from local villages including Orlingbury and Walgrave.
Parish is Orlingbury and the County Council is Northamptonshire
Boundaries: The boundary is marked in blue along the track to the south and east. The west boundary is bordered by fields and woodland to the north.
Access: There is excellent access via a hard track (marked in blue on the map) leading directly to the wood. Access is possible all year round with a 4x4 vehicle. Parking is also possible inside the woodland itself.
Viewing: You are welcome to visit this wood by yourself, but please download and print a map showing the location of the woodland and ensure that you have a copy of these sales details with you. Many of our woodlands do not have mobile phone reception or internet access so we recommend either printing the details or downloading them to your phone or tablet. Please take care when viewing as the great outdoors can contain unexpected hazards and woodlands are no exception.
Directions: Elder Wood, Redhouse Road, Orlingbury, Kettering
For viewing purposes, park on the verge near the metal gate on Redhouse Road, please don't block the gate.
Pass through the public bridleway gate into the field to the left of the main entrance. Follow the perimeter on your right hand side until you see a space in the hedgerow, pass through the boundary and join the main woodland track.
After around 400 metres you will come to a right hand bend where a small stream passes underneath the track, Elder Wood will be on your left.

Broadband availability and predicted speed
Broadband speed is measured in megabits per second, with the number returned showing how fast the connection is. Each reading is based on the highest predicted speed of any major broadband network for services that deliver the download speeds. The following are the different readings that we may display:
Basic: Up to 30 Mbit/s
Super-fast: Between 30 Mbit/s and 300 Mbit/s
Ultra-fast: Over 300 Mbit/s
The data is updated three times a year. The checker results are predictions and should not be regarded as guaranteed. For more information, see: https://checker.ofcom.org.uk/en-gb/about-checker#Answer_0_2
Mobile phone signal availability and predicted strength
Mobile signal predictions are provided by the four UK mobile network operators: EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. Predictions can vary significantly from the coverage you may actually experience as a result of local factors (especially terrain). Ofcom has tested the actual coverage provided in various locations around the UK to help ensure that these predictions are reasonable. The values shown against a property can be broken down as follows:
Clear: No bars, no signal predicted
Red: One bar, reliable signal unlikely
Amber: Two bars, may experience problems with connectivity
Green: Three bars, likely to have good coverage and receive a data rate to support basic web services
Enhanced: Full bars, likely to have good coverage indoors and to receive an enhanced data rate to support multimedia services
