Description

Sussex House was built by renowned architect Geoffrey Bateman in 1965 for his own occupation. It's built in the modernist style, characterised by an emphasis on volume, asymmetrical shapes and minimal ornamentation. The movement was prominent in the 20th century and represents a striking departure from the norm. The current owners bought the property in 2013 and after a comprehensive program of renovation, with a careful eye on originality and authenticity, they have created a unique and spectacular home.

There is a long list of interesting features throughout the house including black brickwork, golden joinery, terrazzo floor and teak panelling. Much of the interior is original from when the house was built and there is a beguiling combination of originality and contemporary conveniences. There are large windows throughout the house which flood the rooms with natural light.

The ground floor comprises an entrance hall leading to an inner hall with staircases to the first and lower ground floors. There is a large main reception room with a feature fireplace and adjacent shelving, timber cladding to one wall and exposed brickwork to two walls. The dining area has a door to the garden. The kitchen breakfast room offers a range of cupboards and integrated appliances, door to utility room. There are two bedrooms, a family bathroom and guest cloakroom.

The first floor offers a main bedroom suite with shower room and fitted wardrobes. Of particular note is the first floor family room which enjoys a south west aspect with access onto the roof terrace which adds an additional outside living space.

The lower ground floor has potential to be used as a self contained apartment with a reception room and kitchen area, a bedroom, shower room and study. There are two separate doors to the side walkway, one serving the reception room to enable use as a self contained apartment.

The house is approached via a paved driveway providing parking for several cars and a double carport. The remainder is laid to artificial grass and flowering borders with a variety of trees and plants. The rear garden has been landscaped with a paved sun terrace, decked area, ornamental pond, a putting green with artificial grass surface and a pergola. To the right of the garden is a substantial brick built detached summer house with sliding doors to the garden, door to store room.
