LAIRA Laira, previously documented as Lare (1591), Lary poynte (1638), the Leerie (1643), and the Lairy (1802), originally referred to the part of the estuary of the River Plym from the Cattewater up to Marsh Mills in Plymouth, Devon, England. The name may have originated from a Brythonic word akin to the Welsh "llaeru," meaning 'to ebb.'
The A379 road and the disused Plymouth to Yealmpton railway line intersect the estuary just above the Plymouth suburb of Cattedown via two bridges both named Laira Bridge.
The disused railway and more recent road crossings of the Laira at Cattedown are notable features.
The term Laira now also encompasses the area of Plymouth surrounding the Laira Traction Maintenance Depot. Much of the housing here was constructed around 1900 for depot employees. Along Old Laira Road stands a memorial plaque honoring the men of Laira who perished in the Great War. Additionally, the old Police/Fire Station, currently functioning as a library, is situated on Old Laira Road. Laira Green Primary School is located in the vicinity, along with a disused United Reformed Church.
Until the early 19th century, Old Laira Road formed the northern shoreline of Lipson Lake (or Bay), a vast tidal inlet on the western side of the estuary. This area, now occupied by the railway depot and Lipson Co-operative Academy, was reclaimed from the estuary and drained, along with Tothill Bay on the southern side of higher ground at Mount Gould, upon the completion in 1802 of an embankment along the entire western shore of the Laira. Subsequently, a new road was laid along this embankment from Laira Green to Prince Rock, soon becoming the primary route into Plymouth from Plympton, Exeter, and beyond, bypassing the often steep and narrow path via Old Laira Road and Lipson – although the new route remained a toll road until 1924.
PLYMOUTH Plymouth, known as Britain's Ocean City, stands out as one of Europe's liveliest waterfront destinations. Nestled alongside a breathtaking waterfront and harbor, Plymouth emerges as an ideal location for property investment.

Broadband availability and predicted speed: obtained from Ofcom on May 2, 2022
Broadband speed is measured in megabits per second, with the number returned showing how fast the connection is. Each reading is based on the highest predicted speed of any major broadband network for services that deliver the download speeds. The following are the different readings that we may display:
Basic: Up to 30 Mbit/s
Super-fast: Between 30 Mbit/s and 300 Mbit/s
Ultra-fast: Over 300 Mbit/s
The data is updated three times a year. The checker results are predictions and should not be regarded as guaranteed. For more information, see: https://checker.ofcom.org.uk/en-gb/about-checker#Answer_0_2
Mobile phone signal availability and predicted strength: obtained from Ofcom on May 2, 2022
Mobile signal predictions are provided by the four UK mobile network operators: EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. Predictions can vary significantly from the coverage you may actually experience as a result of local factors (especially terrain). Ofcom has tested the actual coverage provided in various locations around the UK to help ensure that these predictions are reasonable. The values shown against a property can be broken down as follows:
Clear: No bars, no signal predicted
Red: One bar, reliable signal unlikely
Amber: Two bars, may experience problems with connectivity
Green: Three bars, likely to have good coverage and receive a data rate to support basic web services
Enhanced: Full bars, likely to have good coverage indoors and to receive an enhanced data rate to support multimedia services
Energy Performance data and Internal floor area: obtained on June 24, 2009 from The Energy Performance of Buildings (Certificates and Inspections) (England and Wales) Regulations 2007 or the Home Report if in relation to a residential property in Scotland.
