Property description & features

  • Tenure: Freehold
  • Mixed broadleaf woodland
  • Large pond

Headstone Copse (Plot 2) is a predominantly level, spacious and well mixed woodland, situated in the South Downs National Park.

The western edge of the woodland is the perfect place to watch the sun set and features many mature species including oak, field maple and ash. This area of the woodland has the features typified in ancient woodland and is predominantly hazel understory along with an array of spring wild flowers include bluebell, wood anemone, 4 face clock, Solomons seal and stitchwort. Badgers have made their home here and a path here is a main trail for roe deer, red fox and other small woodland mammals, the perfect place to wildlife watch or for a trail camera.

Numerous clearings throughout allow lots of light into the woodland. Underfoot, grasses cover the wider open areas making it a fantastic space for group woodland activities.

One of the main pathways meanders through the sweet chestnut and beech trees and opens up into areas rich in wildflowers including foxgloves, ragged robin, betony, yellow archangel and red campion. These wild flowers together with the swaying woodland grasses and sedges attract a wide range of woodland butterflies, hummingbird moths, bees and birds including the fire crest. Woodcock overwinter in the woodland in the small areas of scrub and both red kite and buzzard can be seen and heard regularly and seen soaring above the canopy or in the adjacent countryside.

Part of the east boundary forms a land bridge which has views over the neighbouring woodland’s impressive historic flint excavations overlooked by mature beech. About mid way along this footpath the pond was restored earlier this year and is now being allowed to colonise naturally.

Headstone Copse is located on the hill above the popular village of Hambledon giving it far reaching views out across the countryside in all directions. The village with a great local pub, small shop and popular vineyard are all within easy walking distance across the field to the east.

District is Havant and the County Council is Hampshire

Boundaries: The western boundary runs along a historic wood bank with views over fields. The eastern boundary is a public footpath which invites further exploration of the National Park. The southern boundary is marked with stakes painted orange.

Access: There is permissive vehicle access through the field to the south and parking is possible inside the woodland itself. Access on foot is via the path marked in green on the map.

Viewing: You are welcome to visit this wood by yourself, but please download and print a map showing the location of the woodland and ensure that you have a copy of these sales details with you. Many of our woodlands do not have mobile phone reception or internet access so we recommend either printing the details or downloading them to your phone or tablet. Please take care when viewing as the great outdoors can contain unexpected hazards and woodlands are no exception.
