When the weather is fine, Mila and Raymond love nothing more than stepping out of their home on Haythrop Close and heading off on a long walk. “We are just a minute away from the canal, which is so pretty,” she observes. “We can stroll along the banks as far as we like. There is also a playground close by, which is ideal for anyone with children, and Willen Lake is just 10 minutes’ walk from here. This is a lovely place to live.” The Downhead Park property provides an unusual balance of quiet living and exceptional convenience, she explains. “We are very lucky because we can also walk into the city centre from here and have good access to local shops as well. It is quick to head out of Milton Keynes and to pick up the motorway. Everything about this location is ideal.”

Rooms

SUNNY DAYS
It was almost 20 years ago now that her husband first bought the detached, four-bedroom house and since then it has offered them great flexibility. The property has met the needs of a growing family and been ideal for welcoming friends and family to come and stay. “My husband bought it because he was seeking a larger property and he loved this area,” she recalls. “The garden here was especially large, which also made it very attractive. This wraps around the house on three sides, providing lots of space for children to play out and for entertaining.” She adds: “During the summer months there are always areas of sunshine and shade to enjoy, depending on your preference.”

MODERN KITCHEN
The attractive, red-brick house, which has a driveway with off-street parking and a double garage, is entered via a central reception hall. To the left of this is a ground-floor cloakroom and to the right a study. “This has been a perfect place for working from home but the room could have a different use for someone else – it could be a children’s playroom, for example.” The kitchen, with its stylish dark work surfaces and light units, plus a door to the garden, is also on the left. This adjoins a handy utility room. “We have had a new kitchen installed and we created a seating area in one part of the room. This makes it a very useable space,” she says. “The kitchen is where we spend much of our time.”

SUMMER AND WINTER
To the other side of the hall, double doors open into the elegant dining room, which is ideal for Sunday lunches and special dinners. “Double doors from the dining room can be opened up into the sitting room, creating one large space which is perfect for parties or when you have lots of visitors,” she explains. A bright, dual-aspect space, the sitting room has large, glass sliding doors that can be pulled right back on to the garden. “This room is lovely in the summer because people can wander outside if you are having a barbecue,” she says. “In the winter, the gas fire we installed makes it a very cosy and relaxing space.”

COMFORTABLE BEDROOMS
The four bedrooms are all on the first floor of the house. All of these have built-in wardrobes and two of them have en suite bath or shower rooms. The two smaller bedrooms share the family bathroom. “Again this arrangement has offered us great flexibility over the years,” she says. “We have had space for friends and family and have also had a lodger, which has worked well for us. This is a very desirable location to live in because of the convenience.”

PRIVACY AND PEACE
Mila and Raymond have upgraded the house. As well as improving the kitchen and en suite shower room, they have replaced windows and redecorated as necessary. Subject to the relevant planning permissions, there could be scope for even further enhancement, however. “I know the previous owners considered extending out between the kitchen and sitting room to create one large modern kitchen family room,” she suggests. “This would still leave plenty of garden.” The garden has been an immense joy to the family. “It has so much space you could have a wedding out there if you wished!” she says. “For us, however, it has been about the privacy and the peace. The only thing you hear when you wake up in the morning is the sound of birds singing out in the garden.”
