It was the unique balance of village life and exceptional convenience that first appealed to the owner of the house in Loughton. She was also drawn to the quiet road itself because of its proximity to her daughter’s school and its position right opposite parkland. “We are really close to the original village of Loughton, which still has its 13th-century church,” she explains. “At the same time, we can walk into the Hub Milton Keynes in about 15 or 20 minutes and the station is just five or six minutes on foot, which has been ideal for me commuting into London. Everything you need is right on the doorstep here and yet it still has a semi-rural, village feel to it.”

Rooms

Easy Flow
It was seven years ago now that she moved into the attractive five-bedroom house. Dating back to the 1997, it offered her the space she was seeking and the opportunity to create her perfect home with a few touches of her own. “I loved the flow of the house – the way you can move easily from room to room feels very natural,” she says. “You step into a large hallway, which gives on to all the main living areas. There is plenty of space for family living, entertaining and working from home.”

Bright And Airy
Improvements to the property saw her bring in new carpet and flooring, with Karndean laid through much of downstairs. Bathrooms and the cloakroom were replaced; the kitchen breakfast room was upgraded with new units, work surfaces and features such as a boiling water tap. “There were cupboards above the peninsula that I removed to open the space up,” she recalls. “This has helped to give the whole room a much brighter, airier feel.” The garden has also been redesigned and landscaped, she adds. “All the work that has been carried out now makes this a great family home and a wonderful place in which to entertain,” she observes.

Comfortable Living
Visitors to the house are welcomed into the capacious reception hall. From here double doors open into the long drawing room. This has a bay window to the front and a feature fireplace. “We tend to use this room if we have friends over as there are double doors through into the dining room which give it a nice flow,” she says. “French windows then open on to the garden, making the whole space wonderful in the summer months.” Opposite the sitting room is the study. “This is a lovely room for working in and it is a very good size – you could have two desks in here very easily.” There is a ground-floor cloakroom, then access into the kitchen breakfast room and adjoining utility room. The kitchen breakfast room looks out over the garden and connects to the dining room. “We spend much of our time in here, relaxing on the sofa, watching television and enjoying having the door to the garden open on warm days.”

Flexible Home
All five bedrooms and three bathrooms are situated on the first floor of the house. The master bedroom, with its generous en suite bathroom and bank of fitted wardrobes, sits to the rear. A guest bedroom, also at the back, has an en suite shower room, while the other bedrooms have access to the family bathroom. One of these features a Jack-and-Jill door. “The rooms to the front have absolutely beautiful views out over the park,” she says. “One of these is currently arranged as a gym. I have considered opening the master bedroom up into the smallest bedroom to make an en suite dressing room. There is lots of flexibility with this house. New owners could even look into converting the loft as it is so spacious.”

Through The Seasons
In the summer months, the family has enjoyed relaxing out in their landscaped garden. It has also been a lovely backdrop for parties and special occasions. “We once had a barbecue here with 45 guests,” she recalls. The owner admits she will miss the location when she leaves. “There are some superb places to walk or cycle close by, including Lodge Lake and the Teardrop Lakes,” she says. She used to enjoy taking her daughter over to play in the playground at the park when she was little and then to go sledging in winter when she was older. “This is a lovely place,” she agrees. “It is nice to sit in the drawing room in the evening, watching the sun go down over the trees or looking out at all the changing colours of the leaves in the autumn.”
