Perran Foundry
Perran Foundry was built in 1790/1791 to provide machinery for the Cornish mining industry. In addition to the massive beam engines used to pump the mines dry, they manufactured a wide range of other mining equipment, including mobile pumps, water wheels (a replica is on this site), winding engines, boilers, high pressure engines etc. There was an active export industry - the South African, Australian and American mines all bought from Perran Foundry. With the collapse of the mining industry towards the close of the 19th century the foundry closed. For a time it became an animal food mill then ultimately it fell into disrepair. Perran Foundry is widely considered to be one of the most important industrial sites of its period locally. Its buildings' international significance is reflected by the Grade II Listed classification. At the rear of the cottage is a raised leat- a channel which originally carried water from the River Kenall. The creek is tidal, and in the 18th & 19th centuries was navigable, bringing boats to Perran Wharf, many of which were Norwegian, carrying timber for pit props etc - hence the link with the local pub, The Norway Inn, named after the sailors who visited.
