Coneyhurst on the Hill was commissioned in 1883 by Miss Mary Anne Ewart, the daughter of William Ewart, a Liberal MP, who was a relation of William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister.

Mary Ewart, a founder member of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, was a friend of Gertrude Jekyll and of Webb and his sisters. Miss Ewart created beautiful gardens around the house, almost certainly with Webb's advice, and, perhaps because they delighted him, she managed to persuade this reticent architect, in a unique instance, to inscribe his name on a brick in the outer porch.
