Description

Marley South is a significant wing of Marley House, a stunning example of a Georgian Manor House set in extensive grounds and nestled in the rolling countryside of the South Hams. The Marley Estate was owned by the Savery family between the mid 1500’s until 1711. Having been partly demolished and subsequently re-built in the 18th and 19th centuries it has been occupied by many notable families over the years including the Palks and Carews. A community of Bridgettine nuns occupied the house for most of the 20th century and was restored in the 1990s being converted into apartments in the mid-1990’s with the addition of the Dower Houses.

Nowadays Marley House is an exclusive private gated estate of 17 dwellings set in extensive communal grounds accessed via electric gates and a long, private, tree lined drive.

Marley South occupies the large, south-east wing of Marley House and is full of all the charm and elegance you would expect from a house of this era. Grand proportions, ornate cornicing and full height sash windows feature in all principal rooms whilst the ground floor benefits from the modern comfort of under floor heating.

Arranged over three floors the accommodation extends to over 4,500 sq ft offering versatile living. The ground floor really provides the "wow" factor which is evident as soon as you make your way between the stone pillars and up the wide steps to the front door.

The generous kitchen / breakfast room is arranged around the central island and is clearly the heart of the home. It is integrated with a range of appliances including dual Belfast sinks, an oil-fired AGA, an electric oven, a dishwasher and fridge freezer. Three full height, sash windows flood the room with natural light while French doors provide access to the wrap around terrace which is the perfect spot for morning coffee or alfresco dining.

The adjoining drawing room is equally impressive with panelled walls, beautiful cornicing and a feature carved wooden fireplace. Again, full height sash windows flood the room with light and provide a wonderful vista over the surrounding grounds and countryside. Beyond this there is a cloakroom and laundry space on the ground floor.

From the hallway, stairs rise to the first floor landing which continues with the period charm and proportions. The principal bedroom with feature stone fireplace is dual aspect which not only creates wonderful natural light but also provides wonderful views over the communal grounds, private garden, paddock and surrounding countryside.
The en suite bathroom features a roll top bath and separate shower and can also be accessed from the landing. Beyond the principal suite, there is a further double bedroom and an additional sitting room with adjoining study which could also be used as a further, generous double bedroom and dressing room / smaller bedroom.

The second floor offers four double bedrooms, two of which are en suite as well as a family shower room and an abundance of storage.

Gardens and Grounds
Immediately outside the kitchen and drawing room is a wrap-around terrace to the south and east providing the perfect spot for alfresco dining or to take in the fabulous views.

Beyond this there is an area of private garden as well as extensive communal parkland gardens including a tennis court, lake and woodland.

There is a dry store for logs, lawn mowers and the like under the old cloisters as well as a triple sized garage and 2 further single garages and ample parking. In addition, there is a fabulous paddock to the south which extends to around 8 acres.
