Opening the bi-folding doors right across the back of their home ready to welcome guests for a summer barbecue, the owners of the property on Rickley Lane agree this was one of the many reasons they were drawn to the house. The detached property offered space for their own immediate family and for all the visitors they knew they would receive here. “We wanted a good-sized house with plenty of room for everyone,” one of them recalls. “It is not unusual for us to have up to 20 people here and the space we have created at the back of the house is perfect for that. It is also where we spend most of our time as a family, cooking eating and dining together,” he adds. “It is especially lovely in the summer months when you can wander outside or enjoy a cool breeze.”

Rooms

MODERN LIVING
Dating back to the 1960s, the property has only had one previous owner, he suggests. “Our aim was always to renovate it and to make it into the perfect modern-day home,” he continues. “Since buying it, we have been through the whole property, replacing the electrics, carrying out replumbing work and having a new L-shaped extension added to the back of the house.” Indeed the family also opened the whole back of the house up into the extension to create the new kitchen, dining and living area. They replaced the kitchen itself, had new appliances fitted and new tiles laid. Elsewhere in the house there is now a new shower room and bathroom added. “When you step inside this property, which still retains its characterful exterior, it feels like a brand new 21st-century home,” he adds.

INDOOR-OUTDOOR LIVING
The property is entered via a useful porch and then the inner hall. There is a ground-floor shower room and a bedroom to the left, which could suit a family with an older relative or an adult child seeking some privacy from the rest of the household. Equally this room could also be a snug, play room or office, should that suit someone else’s requirements better. The kitchen, dining and living area spans the entire back of the house. To one side is the chic kitchen area; elsewhere there is ample space to watch television or play games together on the L-shaped sofa. “The bi-folding doors are about three metres wide and we like to sit with them open as we have our tea or coffee on warm days,” he says. “There is a breakfast bar, where you can also sit to enjoy a drink or a meal.”

FLEXIBLE HOME
The three remaining bedrooms are on the first floor of the house, together with the family bathroom, which has an extra-large bath. “These rooms don’t all have to be bedrooms – like the bedroom downstairs, they could be arranged to suit the needs of the next owners. We were considering having one as an additional sitting room, for example, and therefore gave it lots of extra sockets.” He adds: “This is a very peaceful house to sleep in.”

PEACEFUL PLACE
Indeed, it was the tranquil Bletchley location of the property that first caught the interest of the current owners. “As a family, we decided we wanted to live somewhere with a more semi-rural feel,” he explains. “We wanted to be somewhere quiet, within reach of beautiful places to walk or spend time at weekends, but also with all the convenience we required – and Rickley Lane was perfect. It is a lovely, peaceful place to be and yet we are just five minutes’ drive from the M1 and A5 and can be in central London by train within 45 minutes.”

BUILDING A LIFE
They have also relished their proximity to good schools, shops, supermarkets and central Milton Keynes, with its many shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. “We can get to Stadium MK very easily, as well as Xscape Milton Keynes, with its cinemas and Snowzone,” he says. “We are well placed for parks and gardens, as well as Willen Lake, where you can picnic and enjoy water sports and other activities.” He adds: “There are also lots of footpaths and cycle routes in the area for those who prefer not to drive.” The family members all agree they will miss their beautiful home when they leave. “I think we will miss the space and the light most,” he observes. “Everything here still feels very new and fresh – it could now be ideal for another family planning to build a life together somewhere like this.”
