When Sue and Roddy first saw the house on West End Road in Silsoe, they knew they had found the perfect home for their young family. Not only did the property offer generous space – with plenty of room for further extension – but it was also in an ideal location. “It
was in a village with a great community spirit and all the amenities we needed, including a good playgroup and school,” Sue recalls. “Yet we would be able to walk out of the front door to be in beautiful countryside within a couple of hundred metres.” Roddy, who was
able to commute easily to London for many years, remembers the road itself was also appealing. “It was a no through road so we knew it would be a quiet and safe place for the children,” he adds. “The houses here were all very individual and this one had very good-sized, sunny rooms, country views from upstairs and a south-facing garden.”

Rooms

LOFTY ASPIRATIONS
When they bought the house 25 years ago, it had four bedrooms and generous ground-floor accommodation. Over the years, they have enhanced this by extending up into the attic and out into the garden with the addition of a conservatory and utility area. “The loft conversion gave us a lovely, large bedroom and bathroom, where you can almost feel completely self-contained,” Sue observes. “This room could have all sorts of uses. The conservatory is a wonderful place to dine or to sit and relax on the comfortable seating while you are looking out over the garden.”

ALL SEASONS
Entered via a porch and then a hallway, the property features a formal dining room to the front. “We have had so many family occasions here over the years, from birthday and wedding anniversary celebrations to Christmases,” Roddy recalls. “There was always plenty of space for everyone to spread out.” The kitchen and the long drawing room now flow easily into the conservatory, again providing space for people to get together. “The kitchen has been a great work area and has a central island which everyone tends to gather round at the beginning of a special occasion,” Sue says. “The drawing room is also excellent when we are entertaining because it is so spacious – but is also nice when it is just us in the winter time, because we can light the wood burner and enjoy cosy evenings in.”

EASY LIVING
There is also a cloakroom downstairs. The family bathroom, with its chic, freestanding bath, is on the first floor and is something of a stylish sanctuary. “We modernised this recently and it is now a lovely place to head off to with a glass of wine after putting the children to bed!” Sue says. There are still four bedrooms on this level too; one of these has an en suite bathroom. The gorgeous attic room is used as another bedroom and its bathroom is also en suite. “There is so much space here to be able to accommodate overnight guests extremely comfortably,” Sue adds. “One of the things we have loved most about this house has been the fact that lots of people can be together in comfort or can disappear off to enjoy their own private space.”

GLORIOUS SUNSHINE
The house has been well maintained over the years. The couple have enhanced it with modern décor, ensuring they make the most of the natural light that pours in. “It is a very sunny house,” Roddy says. The garage has been a very useful extra storage space and the two garden workshops added by the family, which have electricity, have only increased the flexibility of the home further. “One of these could be an excellent office, teenagers’ den or children’s playroom perhaps,” Sue suggests.

BLUEBELL WOODS
Offering children’s activities, clubs and a sports centre, village life has been everything the family hoped it would be. They have also enjoyed their proximity to a good GP, Post Office and transport links. They have found it easy to travel by road and motorway and to reach airports when required. “At the same time, there are all sorts of wonderful walks to choose from, including to nearby bluebell woods,” Roddy says. “We have also really enjoyed being close to English Heritage’s Wrest Park, where we would often go when the children were young.” The couple will miss their friends and the local facilities, as well as the house itself and its scenic surroundings when they leave. “We are only moving now because we are relocating,” Sue adds. “We have been very happy here and have loved having everything we have needed close by while also being able to get away from it all into the countryside.”
