Helmsley (4.2 miles) is a fabulous town with a weekly market and an excellent selection of independent, local shops including clothes stores, a doctor’s surgery, delicatessens, cafes, restaurants, hotels, a spa and a local brewery. In addition there is an arts centre showing films and plays, as well as hosting yoga, exhibitions and concerts. Further attractions are the open air swimming pool, Helmsley Walled Garden, International Centre for Birds of Prey, Helmsley Castle and Duncombe Park.

Kirkbymoorside, about three miles distant, provides a good range of shops, a weekly market, cafes, public houses, primary school (Academy), a doctors surgery, cricket, bowling squash clubs as well as an 18 hole golf course.

Further afield are the Michelin starred restaurants The Star at Harome (2 miles) and The Black Swan, Oldstead (12 miles).

The market town of Malton (13.7 miles) is now the artisan food capital of North Yorkshire with its award-winning monthly food and farmers markets, as well as a weekly market, and annual Food Lovers’ Festival backed by excellent local shops. There are supermarkets, two breweries, restaurants, the Talbot Hotel, cookery school, tearooms, a cinema, theatre and Castle Gardens five acres of park. Malton and Norton golf club boasts 27 holes and situated about a mile outside Malton. In addition there is Malton Secondary School (Ofsted Good 2015) located on Middlecave Road.

The historic market town of Pickering (10 miles) is known as the gateway to the Moors. The town boasts a number of public houses, supermarkets, leisure and sport facilities, local independent shops and cafes as well as a 13th century castle, the North York Moors steam railway and a museum.

Dalby Forest is about 22 miles distant with countless walks and cycle trails through stunning scenery, an adventure course and on site cafe. A dark sky discovery site, it is an excellent location for stargazing.

The A170 from Helmsley links to Scarborough and the Yorkshire Coast.

York is about 22.7 miles to the south and the A1(M) is about 26 miles to the west. Direct trains to London run regularly from Malton, Thirsk (19.6 miles) and York, some making the journey in under two hours.

There are superb attractions within the area including the renowned stately home Castle Howard with its farm shop and fabulous gardens ( 10 miles) and the coastal resorts of Whitby (27 miles), Scarborough (28 miles) and Filey (31.6 miles).
