The Story

In the three decades they have lived at magnificent Rookwood, Malcolm and Brenda have truly made it their own. They have not only upgraded the house and improved the picturesque gardens but they have also built a self-contained annexe, created an office area and installed a range of leisure facilities, including a swimming pool, sauna and hot tub. “We have loved everything about living here,” admits Malcolm. “We have everything we need and we have enjoyed being within walking distance of the river and so many other beautiful places to walk. The house has been a perfect size for our family, and to be able to welcome visitors, and it is very easy to travel from here to London or other parts of the country.” Dating back to the 1930s, the attractive detached property sits comfortably in its plot of 0.6 acres. It won the couple’s hearts as soon as they saw it. “It was a lovely looking house, with a great garden and lots of space both inside and out,” he recalls. “I knew I would be able to have an office here as well – everything just clicked into place for us.”

Splendid Additions

Since then, the Tudor-style house has evolved with their needs. They added the single-storey annexe, which includes a bedroom, shower room, kitchen and sitting room. It has its own entrance, as well as French windows that open on to the garden. “This is a fantastic place to live for anyone wishing to have their independence while also remaining close to other family members,” he adds. Other additions to the house include a games room, conservatory, new windows and a gas central heating system. “We also took all the woodwork back to the way it would have been originally,” he adds. A flat to the other side of the house was converted into Malcolm’s office. Today this is a long room, with its own entrance, cloakroom and large store room.

Happy Days

The main house is entered via a central reception hall. To the right, this opens into a sitting room, with a bay window at one end and a hatch through into the kitchen at the other. There is a ground-floor cloakroom and then the kitchen, which overlooks the garden. To the other side of the hall is the impressive, dual-aspect drawing room. This has a heavily beamed ceiling and French windows on to the garden. It adjoins the dining room, which in turn opens on to the conservatory. “This is where we spend much of our time,” he says. “In the summer we can pull the doors from the conservatory so everyone can wander outside. There is a lovely flow right through the house and out into the garden.”

Friends & Family

Upstairs in the main house, there are four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The generous master bedroom has a very large en suite bathroom. A guest room has an en suite shower room and the two remaining bedrooms share the family bathroom. “The arrangement of the bedrooms and bathrooms here – especially with the self-contained annexe and all the rooms we have downstairs as well – makes it very easy to accommodate guests,” says Malcolm. “I have eight sisters and they can all come to stay at the same time!”

Leisure Time

Family parties and gatherings have been a regular occurrence at Rookwood. In the summer months, everyone has got together for barbecues and summer lunches. They have enjoyed swimming in the pool and playing games on the lawn, and the hot tub and sauna have provided extra opportunities for relaxation. “We also have a lovely large pond which is filled with koi carp – we sit there and they come and feed from our hands!”

Down by the River

On summer days they also like to watch the horses in the paddocks beside the house. They can also step out of Rookwood and stroll down to the Jubilee River in just two minutes. “We also like to walk down to Bray Lock and to the tow path beside the River Thames – it really is lovely.” Within easy reach of Taplow and Maidenhead Crossrail stations, the property is also well placed for reaching motorways and major roads. Maidenhead, Windsor and High Wycombe are good for shopping and it is quick to reach airports. “We also have supermarkets just two minutes away,” he adds. The couple agree they will be sad to leave their perfect home after such a long time. “We will miss everything about it,” Malcolm agrees. “It has become a way of life for us and we have been very happy here.”

Setting the scene

Rookwood sits in 0.6 acres of gorgeous grounds and gardens. To the front is a substantial driveway and access to three garages. The gardens include areas of lawn, a koi carp pond and a swimming pool. There is a terrace for outside entertaining and a hot tub.
