Described in Simon Jenkins’ book ‘England’s Thousand Best Houses’ as a ‘Tudor house behind a Jacobean façade’ The Old Manse is steeped in history and bursting with period features. With the earliest part of the house dating from the late 15th Century it is a curious representation of periods and styles boasting stone fireplaces, hand carved Tudor doorways, a Jacobean staircase, and a fascinating moulded plaster marriage plaque.
‘The Old Manse has a unique quality and a magical atmosphere and I have always said that I didn’t choose it, it chose me! It’s been a wonderful family home with lots of space and light, a place enjoyed by myself, my husband and our three children who all grew up here,’ says owner Jennie. She adds, ‘there is plenty of room indoors to enjoy day-to-day life and entertaining, with quiet corners to escape to and grand spaces for entertaining such as The Great Room. The garden has also proved to be a wonderful place for kids to romp around in, to dine al fresco, or just lap up a good dose of sunshine.’ Having lived here for thirty-nine years, the family have cherished the property and kept it in good order.
‘The Great Room, with its magnificent moulded plaster ceiling featuring the arms of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, is a comfortable and cosy space, particularly when sitting beside the log fire on a winter’s evening.’
‘The large, picturesque patio area – a spot which gets the morning sunshine – at the back of the house has plenty of space for a table to seat eight.’
‘Beckington village has a strong sense of community based around its playgroup, two schools, clubs, societies and busy pubs, The Woolpack and The Foresters. Health and fitness sessions are held at the Village Hall and there is a super farm shop and a popular café.’
‘The village has regular bus services going to Frome, Bath and Trowbridge. There is also a handy fast train service to London from Westbury, just six miles away.’
‘It’s been a great joy to live in a home which gives one the sense of being part of 500 years of history.’

Mobile phone signal availability and predicted strength
Mobile signal predictions are provided by the four UK mobile network operators: EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. Predictions can vary significantly from the coverage you may actually experience as a result of local factors (especially terrain). Ofcom has tested the actual coverage provided in various locations around the UK to help ensure that these predictions are reasonable. The values shown against a property can be broken down as follows:
Clear: No bars, no signal predicted
Red: One bar, reliable signal unlikely
Amber: Two bars, may experience problems with connectivity
Green: Three bars, likely to have good coverage and receive a data rate to support basic web services
Enhanced: Full bars, likely to have good coverage indoors and to receive an enhanced data rate to support multimedia services
