Description

The Old Jail is a charming character property, set in a peaceful coastal setting with panoramic views, situated in the heart of the village. The current owners have undertaken significant upgrading works to provide excellent living space, whilst retaining an abundance of character throughout. The C Listed house was originally built in the early 19th century, and according to Historic Environment Scotland, it was used as a police station and jail from 1884 to 1960. It formerly comprised two jail cells, and one barred cell window to the rear still remains in order to preserve the character.

The principal living accommodation sits on the first floor, approached by a staircase with original wrought iron balustrade and timber banister that curves up from the ground floor entrance hall. The sitting room and the dining kitchen have stunning views across the Firth of Forth. The dining kitchen is fitted with a range of units with solid wooden surfaces and a central island with integrated electric hob. Other kitchen appliances include a Neff oven and grill. It opens up into the adjacent utility room which is plumbed for appliances and has an integrated sink. The sitting room sits off the other landing and, like the kitchen, has outstanding south-facing views. A bathroom also sits off the first floor landing.

The three bedrooms are on the ground floor. The principal bedroom has fitted wardrobes, as well as direct access into the ground floor shower room, which has a second door connecting to the landing to service the other two bedrooms. The shower room was once a jail cell and the original bars remain on the window. There is a back door off the entrance hall leading out to the rear of the house. A generous loft room with four Velux windows is accessed by a Ramsay ladder on the first floor landing.

The garden sits to the rear of the house with the iconic towers of the Forth Rail Bridge acting as a backdrop. There is a generous lawned area which is offered privacy by the hedges that enclose it. At the top of the garden is a lovely seating area from which to enjoy the evening sun. There is also a garden shed here. At the foot of the garden is a gravelled area and separate store. Stone steps from here lead down to the terrace directly behind the house. There is a monobloc area to the front of the house offering off-street parking.

Location

The Old Jail is ideally situated close to the centre of North Queensferry, with views across the Firth of Forth including both the Forth Rail Bridge and the Queensferry Crossing. The property is extremely convenient for commuting, with excellent links to Edinburgh, Dunfermline, Perth and Glasgow. North Queensferry railway station, located about 0.3 miles to the north of the property, is on the Edinburgh and Fife Circle Line, and offers easy commutes to Edinburgh and Edinburgh Parkway where there is a tram link to the airport. Mainline connections are available at nearby Inverkeithing (2 miles). Edinburgh International Airport is within about 11.5 miles and the Central Belt motorway network is within easy reach.

North Queensferry is a peaceful village offering a range of amenities which include a primary school, nursery, playpark, community centre and multi-use games area. Further services include a convenience store and post office, café, restaurants, including The Wee Restaurant and The Shore at the nearby Doubletree Hilton Hotel, and the popular Deep Sea World. Nearby Dunfermline and Inverkeithing provide secondary schooling and a wide range of retail, business and leisure facilities including a cinema. There is a school bus service from North Queensferry for Mary Erskine and Stewart’s Melville schools in Edinburgh.

The Fife Coastal Path nearby is ideal for walkers and runners. The North Queensferry and Port Edgar Boat Clubs and Coastal Rowing Clubs are a haven for the sailing and rowing scene and golfers are also well catered for with a number of golf courses in the surrounding area, the nearest being at Aberdour and Pitreavie.
