BEAUTIFUL AND BESPOKE
Waterdean, in Deanshanger, is a truly unique, bespoke home. Built in 1986, it was the result of lots of meticulous decision-making and planning by the couple. “We bought the land the year before, having been attracted to the village by the schools and the location,” she recalls. “The plot itself was appealing because it was surrounded by beautiful fields, with lots of scenic walks.” She remembers exactly what their new home had to include in its original design. “Space was a key issue and we wanted it to have a really nice kitchen and drawing room.” Her husband adds: “Since I was a child I had always wanted a spiral staircase and so we decided to include that as well.”
MODERN LIVING
The five-bedroom property stands proudly within its good-sized plot, with a large garden and driveway to the front. Double doors open into the entrance hall and then into the splendid kitchen, breakfast and family room. This is an airy space, with light units and granite work surfaces, a central island and breakfast bar, an Aga and ample space for a table and chairs. “The house, including the kitchen, has been modernised and upgraded over the years since we first built it. This is still a fantastic room to spend time in.” The kitchen opens into a utility room, which in turn has a door on to the outside space. There is also a cloakroom here.
AN EASY FLOW
The kitchen also leads into the dining room, which features a large window overlooking the garden. “This is a nice room for Christmas and other special occasions,” she says. “When we designed the property it was important to us that it could accommodate friends and family – and we always have a full house at Christmas!” Doors from the dining room and hall open into the family room, where the metal and wood spiral staircase makes an eye-catching feature. Steps down from the dining room give on to the expansive drawing room, where there is an impressive chimney breast housing an open fire. Glass doors on to two sides create an easy flow between the drawing and garden rooms. “We have a lot of living space and it is very flexible,” he agrees. “New owners can arrange all the rooms to suit their own requirements or even convert the garage to an annex area as it already has the services to that area”.
COUNTRY VIEWS
Upstairs, Waterdean is equally impressive. The spiral staircase rises to reveal bathrooms and bedrooms where every detail has been carefully considered. The master bedroom, with its large en suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe sits at one end of the house. “In the morning, we wake up in here and look out over the fields,” he observes. There is also an impressive guest suite, with an en suite shower room and built-in storage. A smaller bedroom also has an en suite shower room and the remaining two bedrooms share the family bathroom. One of the bedrooms is currently used as a gym and there is also a dedicated study at this level. “It was essential to us that everyone in the family had their own bathroom,” she recalls. “Now it still works very well when people come to stay.”
MOVING ON
Further enhancements to the home have included the inclusion of an outbuilding fondly referred to as the “Japanese tea house.” This has power and lights and could have a range of uses, including as a separate home office. The low-maintenance, carefully landscaped garden has made a beautiful backdrop for entertaining; the owners will miss this when they leave. They will also miss their proximity to shops and everything else they need in the village, as well as to Milton Keynes, with its many amenities and good transport connections. “We have been very happy here,” he agrees. “We will miss the space, the plot and the location and most of all I will miss the koi carp pond. It is hard to leave any home, but especially one you have built yourself.”

Broadband speed is measured in megabits per second, with the number returned showing how fast the connection is. Each reading is based on the highest predicted speed of any major broadband network for services that deliver the download speeds. The following are the different readings that we may display:
Basic: Up to 30 Mbit/s
Super-fast: Between 30 Mbit/s and 300 Mbit/s
Ultra-fast: Over 300 Mbit/s
The data is updated three times a year. The checker results are predictions and should not be regarded as guaranteed. For more information, see: https://checker.ofcom.org.uk/en-gb/about-checker#Answer_0_2
Mobile phone signal availability and predicted strength: obtained from Ofcom on July 28, 2022
Mobile signal predictions are provided by the four UK mobile network operators: EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. Predictions can vary significantly from the coverage you may actually experience as a result of local factors (especially terrain). Ofcom has tested the actual coverage provided in various locations around the UK to help ensure that these predictions are reasonable. The values shown against a property can be broken down as follows:
Clear: No bars, no signal predicted
Red: One bar, reliable signal unlikely
Amber: Two bars, may experience problems with connectivity
Green: Three bars, likely to have good coverage and receive a data rate to support basic web services
Enhanced: Full bars, likely to have good coverage indoors and to receive an enhanced data rate to support multimedia services
Energy Performance data and Internal floor area: obtained on July 23, 2020 from The Energy Performance of Buildings (Certificates and Inspections) (England and Wales) Regulations 2007 or the Home Report if in relation to a residential property in Scotland.
