When Rita and Bryan realised the house on Beddoes Croft was just a stone’s throw from protected Shenley Wood they knew it was the property they were looking for. They loved the space and light the house offered but more than anything it was the location that enchanted them. “As soon as I saw the woodland to the side of the house I realised this would be a wonderful place to live,” Rita recalls. “It was a quiet cul-de-sac and it felt like being in the countryside rather than in Milton Keynes and yet at the same time it was just 10 minutes from everywhere – shops, supermarkets and the station.” Bryan adds: “The woodland is a great place to walk and run and we are also close to playing fields. The location was tranquil and perfect for us.”

Rooms

NATURAL LIGHT
The house itself also made a great impression. Set back from the road and with a large driveway, it has an abundance of kerb appeal. “From the moment I walked through the door, it felt bright and airy,” says Rita. “There are 22 windows here, so it is filled with natural light – and, of course, the views to the side are towards the trees.” Built 22 years ago, the detached, four-bedroom house was just a few years old when they moved in. Since then it has been carefully maintained and updated. “The kitchen and the main en suite shower room have been replaced and we have had solar panels installed,” she continues. “We also made the garage much more useable by removing a pillar and installing an electric door.”

INDOOR-OUTDOOR LIVING
The house is entered via a central reception hall leading to all the ground-floor accommodation. To the left is the capacious drawing room, which has a window at one end and doors on to the garden at the other. “This is a very relaxing room, which is especially nice in the summer when we can have the doors open,” she says. “There is a good flow between the house and garden here, with the garden becoming an extension of the home when the weather is warm. I have been lucky enough to have studied garden design in the past and so we had the whole garden landscaped to my design. It is now an amazing place to spend time.”

FLEXIBLE LIVING
Opposite the drawing room, double doors open into the formal dining room. “We tend to eat in the kitchen, where there is a table, but the dining room has been ideal for special occasions, such as Christmas,” she observes. New owners may, of course, choose to use this space as a sitting room, snug or playroom instead. Beyond it is the study, which has been fitted with desk and storage space. “I work from home and this has been great for me,” Bryan admits. “It is good to be able to close the door on the rest of the house and to have everything I need in one place.”

SUMMER DAYS
To the back of the house are the kitchen, which is well arranged for food preparation and storage, and the utility room. The kitchen has French windows on to the garden, making it easy to carry summer lunches out into the sunshine or to host barbecues. “Four or five years ago we had all the windows in the house replaced – this included the French windows, which can now be opened right back to the brick wall,” Rita explains. “This is much better when you are entertaining people during warmer weather. We have had some very nice occasions here over the years. It is a good house for entertaining, both inside and out.”

BEDROOMS AND BATHROOMS
Upstairs, there has also been ample room to accommodate guests. The master bedroom is a particularly sizeable space, with its own walk-in dressing room and en suite shower room. A guest bedroom to the front has an en suite bathroom and the two remaining bedrooms share the family bathroom. “All the bedrooms here are large enough to accommodate a double bed,” says Rita. The couple are sorry to be leaving Beddoes Croft, with its semi-rural feel as well as its proximity to the station, with trains into London, major roads, restaurants and other amenities. “We benefit from being close to everything in Milton Keynes and yet sometimes it is hard to believe because it is so quiet,” Rita agrees. “We can walk everywhere because of the Redways and having the woods so close is a real bonus. I honestly do believe this is the nicest place to live in Milton Keynes.”
