Looking out from their attractive family home, the owners of the property on Tamworth Stubb can watch the horses grazing and the birds flying between the leafy trees. Next to their five-bedroom house is a paddock, which is part of a protected stretch of land owned by the Parks Trust in Milton Keynes. “My wife loved the place as soon as she saw it,” one of them remembers. “She liked the peace and quiet and the fact it felt like countryside despite being so close to everything we need.” The houses nearby were all individual in style and there was a sense of open space in the area, he adds. The property itself was a good size and it had a generous garden. “We wanted a large house and could see this one would give us plenty of room for our family to get together.”

Rooms

HIGH-QUALITY HOME
Built on land once owned by a nearby country house, the property has a Tudor-style appearance, with ample external space to the front, as well as the rear. Since moving in, the current owners have significantly enhanced it, carrying out improvements to increase internal space, upgrade interior features and landscape the garden. “We converted the double garage into a large dining room, with two sets of windows,” he says. “We used the same bricklayers who built the property – and the same bricks – to ensure it looked original. This has been a great addition to the house as we regularly have 12 to 15 people dining with us on special occasions, such as Christmas and birthdays.”

OAK AND GLASS
Other improvements have seen the roof insulated to a high standard; new oak floors laid and doors installed, and the original staircase in the reception hall replaced with a beautiful oak and glass design. “This has not only brought a much more contemporary look to the large hallway but has also opened it up and made it lighter,” he observes. The kitchen and bathrooms have also been upgraded, a wood-burner has been fitted in the drawing room and the front of the house has recently been repainted. The grounds in front of the house were also opened up and the position of the drive adjusted. “We had thought about adding a double garage, with a games room or home office above,” he adds. “In the end, we didn’t ever build it but it is something new owners may wish to consider because we have MK Highways permission to move the driveway entrance further up the road.”

HAPPY TIMES
The house is entered from the front via the great-sized reception hall that fans off into all the main ground-floor accommodation. To the right is the drawing room, which has French windows on to the garden. “This is a massive room that is really nice at Christmas, when the whole family can be in there together, with the children opening presents. We have lots of lovely memories of times spent in here.” There is a cloakroom, the large dining room, which has an external door, and two more rooms that are currently used as home offices. “My wife and I each have an office – I enjoy spending time in mine as it overlooks the garden which is south facing.” The kitchen breakfast room features two sets of French windows on to the expansive terrace and garden. It has grey, high-gloss units, dark work surfaces, a central island and ample space for a table and chairs.

SUMPTUOUS SUITE
With five bedrooms and three bathrooms upstairs, it has also been easy to accommodate overnight guests. Three bedrooms share the family bathroom, a guest bedroom has an en suite shower room and the sumptuous master bedroom has a walk-in dressing area and very large en suite bathroom. “The size of this bedroom does take people aback,” he admits. “But we can sit in there and watch television and look over the garden from the dressing area and bathroom – it is a very nice.”

RURAL FEEL
The beautiful garden, with an exquisite cedar shingled gazebo and extensive screen range of varied mature trees along the rear boundary and numerous other shrubs and plants, including an impressive palm tree, has given the owners great joy. “The established garden and the paddock give it a real country feel and yet we have quick access to central Milton Keynes, schools, surgery.shops, supermarkets, the motorway and train station – and we can travel to London easily,” he says. “We will miss all of this when we leave – and we will miss the space as we are downsizing. We consider ourselves exceptionally lucky to have had the opportunity to have been able to live somewhere as peaceful as this.”

SETTING THE SCENE
The house is set back from the road by a very large driveway, with ample space for several vehicles to park. To the rear there is a large, lawned garden, with a plethora of beautiful, specimen trees and shrubs and a generous terrace for outdoor relaxation and entertaining. The garden also features a shed and a gorgeous gazebo that was handcrafted by Amish carpenters in the US.
