With young children, the owners of the house at Upperwood Close were drawn to the Shenley Brook End property by its proximity to some of the most sought-after schools in the area. Then, when they saw the plans for the new-build property, they realised it would be their perfect home. “We wanted a four-bedroom house, on a tranquil cul-de-sac, which would be a safe place for children to play,” one of them recalls. “This house was also going to have a large back garden, where my wife would be able to keep an eye on our youngest from the kitchen.” He continues: “We also liked the idea of having input into the internal finish of the house as it had not been completed “We will feel sad to leave this house and have enjoyed many memories here”

Rooms

GREAT POTENTIAL
The couple were pleased with the quality of the build and the the finish. Since then they have redecorated regularly and ensured they house has been well maintained. “At times we have had ideas about extending but now the children have all left home we have decided to downsize instead,” he explains “New owners could extend the house out to the rear and convert it into a large kitchen, dining and living space. Similar properties on our road have also gone up into their lofts, creating two additional bedrooms and the garden has ample space for a separate home office or studio.”

AN EASY FLOW
The layout of the house as it is now, however, has worked very well for them. It is entered via a wide, central hall, which offers access to the study, drawing room, kitchen and cloakroom. The study has a bay window on to the front garden. “This has been a great place to work because it is a good size and provides privacy from the rest of the house,” he admits. Opposite the study is the drawing room, an even larger room, also with a bay window to the front and a recently installed log gas fireplace. There are then double doors through into the dining room. “The arrangement downstairs has worked very well for us because it has been so easy to move from room to room,” he agrees. “We have a very large family and often have lots of people here at weekends.”

FRIENDS AND FAMILY
The dining room has doors on to the garden and also adjoins the kitchen. The kitchen itself is a good size, with plenty of room for a table for casual meals. “Friends and family often come to eat with us and by opening the tables right up in the dining room and kitchen we are able to accommodate over 14 people in total.” In the summer months, people also spill out into the garden, where the family often position a gazebo. “We spend as much time as possible out there when the weather is fine,” he says. “Because we are surrounded by leafy trees it is very private and is always nice and quiet.”

BEDROOM SPACE
All four bedrooms are on the first floor of the property, together with the family bathroom. The master bedroom suite spans the width of the house and features ample built-in storage. “This is a lovely room, with plenty of space,” he says. “We enjoy being at the front of the house, where we can look out over the close.” All the rooms are currently arranged as bedrooms but it would be easy to have one as a home office should new owners prefer to use the ground-floor study as as snug, playroom or family room.

EXCELLENT LOCATION
The Shenley Brook End location of the house has been everything the couple hoped it would be. The children were able to walk to school and the whole family has enjoyed the proximity to green open spaces, such as Shenley Wood and Furzton Lake. “We tend to go for a walk around the lake three or four times a week,” he says. “It is very easy to walk or cycle here because of the Redways.” They often stroll over to the Westcroft Centre to go shopping or dine out and have also enjoyed their proximity to central Milton Keynes, the train station and major roads. “It is very quick to travel into London,” he agrees. “We have been very happy here – the house has been perfect for us; the local community is very friendly and we could not have chosen a better area.”
