Standing beneath a leafy canopy, Buxton House, is a beautiful, mid-19th century home on the fringes of the much-loved town of Leek. Known as the ‘Queen of the Staffordshire Moorlands' Leek has a rich history and boasts independent shops, antiques and quirky tea rooms. Buxton House blends wonderfully into its surroundings and its history rivals that of the town itself.
A Rich History
Dating to the mid-1800s, this timeless home is filled with period features that tell fascinating stories of its past. Once occupied by Rachel Brough, Buxton House was used as a Town House that she and her children could use as a base for attending business and grammar school. Later Buxton House would become the home of Joshua Brough, the former secretary of the Penny Bank at the Mechanics Institute. Brough was a significant figure in Leek as he erected the famous Buxton Spout, purchased Haye Hall, and along with Joshua Nicholson, he was integral in establishing Leek as a silk town under the manufacturing firm of Joshua and James Brough & Co.. Brough went on to build the iconic Buxton House in 1837. William Spooner Brough was to inherit Buxton House in 1885 and during his time there he planted the avenue of trees that can still be seen today lining Buxton Road.
Victorian Elegance
As you approach Buxton House from Buxton Road, you can almost feel the history coursing through the trees, and you're taken back to a time of elegance and romance. Walk in the footsteps of the Brough family as you follow the cobbled path to the entrance of Buxton House. Immediately you sense the grandeur of this incredible house as you reach the central doorway with its wooden architrave and traceried fanlight,
Step into the entrance hall where the colourful, Victorian tiled flooring leads you through to the dining room on your left. As you open the door to the dining room, warm, bright décor and contemporary lighting mingle with period features and illusionary wallpaper to create a vibrant and welcoming space for sharing with the family or entertaining guests. Dual aspect, sash windows and a grand stone fireplace add to its allure.
Return to the entrance hall and continue to the lounge on your right. Floor-to-ceiling sash windows, arched alcoves and authentic stone fireplace and hearth all vie for your attention in this calming space where you can enjoy contemporary living wrapped inside period charm.
Where Old Meets New
Meander back along the hallway to the jewel in Buxton House– the kitchen. Blending stripped wooden flooring, sash window and Belfast sink with a contemporary vertical radiator and stylish units, the kitchen seamlessly fuses the old with the new. Linger over your morning coffee as you gaze out to the leafy garden or rustle up a sumptuous breakfast for the family. A utility room and shower room complete the space, providing all the amenities you need for modern living.
From the kitchen, step into the rear garden where a mature lawn and tall trees create a secluded outdoor retreat for unwinding among the sound of nature, or watch the children play in the summer sun. A light-filled sunroom offers an indoor escape for those cooler days when you prefer to step into the warmth and soak up the garden views from inside.
A Land of Dreams
Make your way back through the kitchen and into the entrance hall and follow the winding staircase past a stunning Victorian arched window to the first floor. Serving the five bedrooms is an impressive family bathroom. Twin counter-top basins, a freestanding clawfoot bath with an overhead rainfall shower and beautifully tiled walls and flooring create a luxurious and calming space for those moments indulgence.
Each of the bedrooms is individually styled to complement the building's history with sash windows framing leafy garden views. Accessed from the rear bedroom, a further smaller bedroom presents a perfect space for a young child, playroom or walk-in wardrobe. Off the landing is a study neatly tucked away where you can work from home or enjoy some private time for reading.
This historic property will be available to rent from July and includes the additional benefit of your very own gardener!
