Description

12 Maids Causeway is a substantial Grade II Listed townhouse which is in the middle of Charles Humfrey’s Doll Houses. This is one of the best houses in Cambridge in a premium location overlooking Midsummer Common.

The property is approached behind a symmetrical ornamental garden designed to mirror the house, with a York stone path leading to a set of stone stairs approaching a black panelled front door. Beyond the heavy door opens into a fully glazed vestibule and a wide hallway beyond.

On the lower ground floor there is an exceptional, well-appointed kitchen breakfast room which was rearranged by the current owners some 30 years ago, to allow in plenty of light and access to a terrace through French doors. The bespoke wooden units provide an array of storage with a central island and breakfast bar. There is a black gas fired Aga and separate Gaggenau oven with a gas hob, two Miele dishwashers, a large Subzero fridge-freezer, a walk-in pantry and separate utility room. Throughout this floor, there is underfloor heating (electric) and travertine flooring. This exceptional space is further enhanced by a seating area around a woodburning stove and dining area. A large storage room is ideal for maintaining wine at a steady temperature.

On the raised ground floor, the dining room has a working fireplace with stone surround, high ceilings, picture rails, deep skirting and access to a raised wrought iron terrace overlooking the garden. The drawing room which also has views over the rear garden has a wood burning Yotel stove, gorgeous inlaid green marble mantelpiece, bookcases and shutters to the windows. To the left of the front door is a well-appointed study with fitted bookshelves and cupboards and to the right of the hall an exceptional library hallway.

On the first floor there are three bedrooms. The main bedroom suite runs from the front to the back of the house with a large bedroom with walk-in cupboards to either side of the bed and a separate dressing room with double depth hanging rails offering plenty of storage. To the front is a wonderful bathroom with a freestanding bath overlooking Midsummer Common, twin sinks and a walk-in shower with raindrop shower head. There is a further en suite bedroom with a bath with shower over, white sanitaryware and stainless steel fittings. This lovely room, with painted shutters, also has a walk-in dressing room accessed through the bathroom. To the front of the house is a large double bedroom with an associated shower room. On the second floor there are two further double bedrooms and an en suite shower room.

Outside to the rear, there is a York stone terrace beyond the kitchen with steps leading up to a walled par-terre garden with shingle gravel pathways. There is a gate to the rear of the property and double gates which permit, if required, off street parking within the property otherwise parking is in resident's parking bays on Maids Causeway and local streets.
