History & Heritage
Glewstone Boat occupies a glorious position on the west bank of the meandering River Wye some 4 miles southwest of the market and tourist town of Ross-on-Wye. Its particular location enables stunning views both upstream and downstream across the river. Not only does the property enjoy a beautiful outlook, it also has amazing heritage when it comes to the history of the area. Believed to have been initially constructed some 350 years ago, the cottage has over that time entertained fishermen, tourists, ferrymen, bargemen and probably the odd poacher! Back in the glory days, salmon fishing on the River Wye was world class.
It brought a very particular audience to the banks here, for salmon fishing was a sport for men with very deep pockets! Among them was a local fisherman, a gentleman of leisure Robert Pashley, also known as “The Wizard of the Wye”.
His prowess as a salmon fisherman was legendary. In his lifetime, he is said to have caught over 10,000 salmon. He liked to fish at Glewstone Boat with his ghillie Jack Whittingham. After Pashley died, Jack went on to work for Courtaulds, who leased the fishing rights beside the cottage. Under Courtaulds employment, Jack witnessed many captains of British Industry enjoying a days fishing, wining and dining at Glewstone Boat. For those keen to continue the fishing history, fishing is available through The Wye and Usk Foundation.
Further back, and before the arrival of the railway, the Wye was a major trading route with barges plying their trade up and down the river. Glewstone Boat was a major stopping point for the bargees, and definitely a watering hole too! Thereafter it was run both as tearooms and at one time a shop.

Accommodation, Approach & Gardens.
The original cottage is of substantial stone construction with later additions being rendered and white painted, the whole standing under a double pitched, Welsh slate roof. The cottage was re roofed in 2013, and at that time the roof was raised, and a substantial amount of both thermal and acoustic insulation was inserted.
Ground floor accommodation comprises a superb 21' living room with fireplace to one end, 15' sitting room, and 13' kitchen/breakfast room. All of these rooms enjoy a stunning, unspoilt outlook directly across the river towards farmland beyond. The first floor comprises three bedrooms and bathroom and w.c. Central heating is from an oil fired radiator system, and certain windows are double glazed. Positioned to the west side of the ground floor is a garage, whilst to the east side is a carport.
Just a matter of yards away and positioned even closer to the river is the former Fishermans Lodge. This comprises a superb 30' Rod Room, with French doors leading to a full width balcony to the front, whilst to the rear of the property is a 14' bedroom, 10' kitchen and bathroom and w.c. Again, the property has its own independent oil fired boiler, and certain windows are double glazed.
The approach driveway leads directly off the A40 Ross to Monmouth dual carriageway, and care needs to be taken when turning off that carriageway shortly after a layby. The tarmac drive leads through a gate down towards the properties, there being ample parking for numerous vehicles to both sides of the accommodation.
Extending from the driveway down towards the river there are neatly maintained lawned gardens with two superb ancient Weeping Willow trees framing the river itself.
Because the cottage and lodge are positioned well above these lawned gardens, neither building has had water ingress from the river since 1926, and although we don't have documentary evidence, we suspect the same would be the case for years previously.

If approaching from the outskirts of Ross-on-Wye, leave the western outskirts of Ross at Wilton roundabout (BP Service Station) and proceed on the dual carriageway towards Monmouth, and after 1.8 miles, you will see a layby on the left hand side.
