The detached house on Audley Way in Ascot has been extended and enhanced over the past 30 years to become a much-loved, flexible home for enjoying with family and friends.

The Story

From christenings and garden parties out on the lawn to lively Christmas dinners round the table in the dining room, the owners of the house on Audley Way have so many happy memories from across the past three decades. “This was our first home together,” one of them recalls. “We bought it before we had children, when we were both working and just setting out on life together.” They were drawn to the property for both the space it offered and its surroundings, he remembers. “It was a peaceful cul-de-sac, which felt like a safe place to bring up a family and yet it was also a fantastic location for reaching everything we needed and travelling to other places from. It was easy to get to motorways, the train station, shops and lovely places to walk. After moving to Ascot, I also think we realised we had come to a very special place, somewhere with a unique vibrancy to it because it hosts a major event – Royal Ascot – every year.”

MAJOR EXTENSION

Believed to date back to the late 1960s, the detached property had three bedrooms when they bought it 29 years ago. “It was perfect for us at the time, but as our family got bigger, we decided we needed more space,” he explains. “In 2008, we carried out a major two-storey extension to the side of the house and extended out to the rear. This gave us an extra bedroom and allowed us to reconfigure the accommodation both upstairs and down. We were able to create a separate dining room, a good-sized kitchen and a massive drawing room that looks out over the garden.”

NATURAL WOOD

The property is entered via a porch and then a reception hall with access to the downstairs cloakroom and the kitchen. “We had a modern kitchen, with light units and black work surfaces, fitted. It is a space that has worked very well for us.” The kitchen adjoins the dining room, which can also be entered via the inner hall. The layout of the house now flows well and its interior design offers a sense of cohesion. The couple have opted for a natural colour scheme, with lots of exposed wood, making it feel warm and welcoming throughout. “There was a mahogany parquet floor here already and when we did the extension work my wife picked all the tiles up and re-laid them in the new inner hallway and dining room. This now feels really lovely when you come into the house.”

CREATIVE THINKING

The dining room is used every day for meals and has been the backdrop to many special occasions over the years. Opposite it is a study, which has been ideal for working from home. “This has been perfect for me – it has allowed me to close the door and concentrate, away from anything else that has been going on in the house,” he says. “I also enjoyed creative writing and having a dedicated space to use has been excellent.”

WHERE THE HEART IS

The heart of the home, however, is the new drawing room, which stretches right across the back of the house and has windows on three sides that bring the natural light streaming in. There are French windows in here that can be opened up on to the garden on warm days and that allow people to spill outside at summer parties. “This is the room we use the most for general living purposes,” He admits. “My wife paints in here, because the light is so good, and it is also perfect for plants. We watch television in here and entertain friends. It’s a very flexible space.”

GREEN SPACE

All four bedrooms are upstairs, together with the family bathroom. The master bedroom has an en suite shower room. “This is the biggest room and it looks out over the garden, which is nice,” he says. The garden has also given the family huge pleasure. There is a terrace for outdoor relaxation, as well as plenty of space for children to play. “I am a keen vegetable grower and have enjoyed looking after the garden,” he agrees. “It is a lovely, quiet place to be and has been a big feature for us. We have had some wonderful family parties out here too.” When not enjoying their own garden, they have savoured their proximity to places like Swinley Forest, Windsor Great Park and Virginia Water. “Everything about living here has been fabulous,” he agrees. “We can walk the railway station; the children were able to go to school at Ascot Heath and Charters and this has been a lovely neighbourhood to live in.” He adds: “We have been here for so long that in many ways it will be hard to move on. We have had such a wonderful life here.”

SETTING THE SCENE

To the front of the house there is a driveway with room for at least two cars to park. To the rear the house opens on to a beautiful garden, with a lawn, terrace, kitchen garden and established trees and plants.
