Bright, airy and designed for comfort and convenience, Chiltern Cottage has been everything the current owner hoped it would be. He bought it during a period of his life when he was seeking good family space but also ease of living, he recalls. “I was looking for a low maintenance home, somewhere that I could move into straight away, without having to do any work and without a garden – and this was perfect for me,” he recalls. “It was newly built and ready to move into. It had the room I needed for my two boys but was also somewhere I could lock up and leave when I needed to travel for work.”

Rooms

NATURAL LIGHT
Individually built within the grounds of a former village pub, the three-bedroom house has been enhanced by the current owner over the six and a half years he has been living there. Where there was originally a small garden, he had a bespoke carport built, offering useful covered parking and storage space. “This was very well done, but, of course, someone else could take it down if they wished to. It would be fairly simple to reinstate the garden and create an outdoor seating space instead.” The interior of the house has also been redecorated. It now largely features neutral shades, with a little soft colour here and there. “We wanted to make the most of the abundance of natural light that was already here,” he explains.

A WARM WELCOME
The two-storey property is entered at ground-floor level via a central front door and reception hall. There is a ground-floor cloakroom at the end of the hall. To the left of the front door is the drawing room, a sizeable space with windows to the front and rear. “There are French windows, which are lovely to open up on a summer’s day, at the back,” he says. This elegant space is great for both entertaining and relaxing at home. It has ample room for comfortable seating, as well as dining furniture or a study space should that be required. “There is plenty of flexibility here to arrange the house as you wish,” he observes. “I chose to create a study and dining space within the kitchen instead.”

HUB OF THE HOUSE
The gorgeous kitchen is the jewel in the crown at Chiltern Cottage. An exceptionally large space, it has been cleverly designed to feature stylish units, a central island, with breakfast bar, and generous food preparation space at one end. The other end has lots of room for a dining table and chairs and the office space. If new owners wished to create a dining area within the drawing room next door, instead, however, they could choose to have a sofa and television corner in this part of the room. “This is very much the hub of the house,” the current owner agrees. “This is where we gather to socialise, cook, eat together and work. I work from home and having a home office area here has been ideal for me. It will be a great space for anyone who enjoys entertaining or is seeking a lovely family area for day-to-day living.”

COMFORTABLE BEDROOMS
A skylight window on the landing brings light flooding in from above. There are three bedrooms of the first floor of Chiltern Cottage. One of these is the large master bedroom, which benefits from an en suite shower room and walk-in wardrobe, as well as fitted cupboards. The other two bedrooms are also double in size, and either could comfortably be used as a study or home office should that be required. The family bathroom is also at this level.

PERFECT PLACE
The Wing location of the property has suited the owner as well as the house itself. He has found it quick to travel into both Leighton Buzzard and Milton Keynes, with their many shopping and leisure amenities, as well as trains into London. “It has been wonderful having all this close by, yet also being near beautiful countryside if you want to go for a walk,” he says. The property is in an excellent location for anyone else who travels and is seeking a lock-up-and-leave home or someone with a main property but looking for a convenient bolthole within easy reach of London yet not in the hustle and bustle of the city. “It could also suit someone like me who is seeking a low maintenance, family home,” he adds. “Although it is so easy to look after, this is such a welcoming house – everyone who walks in says how homely it feels, and it has been a lovely place to live.”
