A delightful Grade II listed 15th century house positioned on a country lane 1.2 miles from Goudhurst village.

Description

Lollards is a beautiful Grade II listed timber-framed building of historical significance. The property features a jettied section in part to the south and west aspects and is featured in a Royal Commission report on the Medieval Houses in Kent, stating the house has 15th century origins with an 18th century extension, although some records suggest an earlier date.

The house is named after a group named the Lollards who were followers of the teachings of John Wycliff (c1320-84). They believed that everybody should have access to the words of the Bible and therefore be able to interpret the meaning for themselves. They felt that the clergy of the Catholic Church had too much control over the translation and rituals of Christianity and therefore over the general populace. They favoured a simplified religion and denied the transubstantiation as superstitious practice. (abridged from House Historians publication, Jane Davidson, 2001).

Oak flooring features to much of the ground floor and the property is presented in generally good condition although could benefit from further updating.

Location

Lollards is situated on the outskirts of Goudhurst, a pretty and popular Wealden village that provides good local shopping. More extensive shopping, sport and leisure facilities can be found in Cranbrook and Tunbridge Wells.

Further sporting amenities include golf clubs, a health club with crossfit at Risebridge, sailing, SUP, rowing and fishing at Bewl Water and riding, walking, mountain bike trails plus Go Ape activity centre in Bedgebury Forest and Pinetum.

Education opportunities exist within the area in both the private and state sector, at all levels, with the house being inside the Cranbrook School Catchment (2023).

Mainline commuter rail services into London Charing Cross, London Bridge and Cannon Street can be found at Marden station, 3.8 miles to the north.
