The town is also commended for its many community-led initiatives and the renowned Judge’s Lodgings Museum being the winner of numerous national awards, 
 
The market town of Knighton, is 7 miles to the north, with the train station onto the Heart of Wales line running to Shrewsbury and to Swansea.  Larger towns of Leominster, 13 miles and Ludlow, 17 miles, offer a wider range of shops, services and railway stations.

The earliest recorded name for Presteigne is Presthemed in 1137-9, meaning \'the border meadow of the priests\'. The Welsh name is Llanandras, first recorded in the second half of the 13th century, roughly translating to \'sacred enclosure of Andrew,\' in reference to St Andrew’s church (roughly opposite Godwyn House) which stands next to the river crossing on the ancient Lugg Bridge, which still forms the border between England and Wales    
 
This area is believed to be the oldest part of Presteigne, with dwellings clustered around the bridge and church in the Saxon period, over some 1,000 years ago.    
 
Broad Street, on which Godwyn House stands, rises up from the Lugg Bridge to join the High Street, and boasts an eclectic variety of historic buildings, most based on ancient narrow burgage plots, running back from the street.    
 
 A deed shows Godwyn House, named after the family that owned the plot in 1792, as “newly built” in 1815. It stands on two of the burgage plots, which run from Broad Street to Back Lane, with the evocatively named Ave Maria Lane to its side. The renowned Judge’s Lodging is a few properties away.    
 
Godwyn House is an elegant, genteel brick and stone residence, “newly built” in 1815, but stands on a much earlier site.     The rendered stone three storey, double fronted Grade II listed property sits halfway up Presteigne’s prestigious Broad Street and has a beautiful graduated stone slate roof. The elegant late Georgian façade has two pedimented bays with a matching pedimented front door hood, with steps up to the front door.   
 
There is also a magnificent chimney stack to the side on Ave Maria Lane.  Unusually for a townhouse it has the rare advantage of having its own garage and a substantial two storey brick and stone outhouse with adjacent gardeners w.c.    The Listed status was awarded in 1986 due to its group value among the pretty historic properties of Broad Street. 
 
Godwyn House retains its typical Georgian layout of an elegant front door, opening onto a full length hallway,  off which opens the two main reception rooms and a kitchen behind with adjoining larder.  As you would expect from a Georgian house, all the rooms have great dimensions, with high ceilings.
