Morecambe House dates from 1458 and was added to in 1790 creating a Georgian façade and an interior which is essentially Georgian in character. The present owner purchased the property in 2008 when in need of major restoration. The renovation works have carefully and sympathetically retained all period features which include ornate and simple ceiling cornices, archways, arched recesses, period fireplaces, shuttered windows, beamed ceilings and a tessellated floor in the hall. Sections of the interior have been redesigned and all wiring and plumbing were replaced. A John Lewis of Hungerford kitchen was installed, together with shower rooms and bathroom fitted to a high specification.
The drawing room and dining room, which each having a period fireplace, are located at the front of the house overlooking St. Mary's Street. The split-level sitting room, part of which is full height, has a log burning stove and opens onto the rear garden. There is a gallery above the sitting room and serves as a study or an occasional bedroom with en-suite shower room.
The kitchen/breakfast/family room is a superb space with a log burning stove fitted in a stone inglenook fireplace in the family area. The bespoke kitchen area has a gas fire Aga, painted wood units, an island unit with Belfast sink and boiling tap, and integrated appliances include a two ring hob, wine fridge, cabinet fridge/freezer, separate electric fan oven and dishwasher.
On the first floor the principal bedroom has an en-suite shower room and is a lovely room There are three further bedrooms, one of which has a lovely view of the church tower and a French door opening to stone steps leading down to the garden. In addition, the occasional bedroom/study with en-suite shower room looks down onto the sitting room. With a full glass partition this could easily be converted into a permanent bedroom 5 with en-suite. The excellent family bathroom with roll top bath has a separate shower cubicle.
Outside
The very pretty walled rear garden is split level and has been designed for a mixture of textures and colour. There are raised beds and borders planted with a variety of flowering and climbing shrubs, including roses. There is a pond, and ornamental plants. Shallow stone steps lead up to a summer house which overlooks the garden, set against a backdrop of the church tower.
To the side of the property, there is a large sliding timber door which opens onto a parking area for two cars.
