The Story
Walking through Lily Cottage on Course Road, it is hard to imagine what it looked like before Callum and Laura worked their magic on it. The couple, who have extensive experience in the property business, have transformed the character home into a 21st-century, family haven – somewhere to relax, work and entertain friends. “It is almost like a new home in many ways,” Callum observes. “We took it right back to the four walls and then started again.” The couple, who were drawn to the street as soon as they visited it, could see the potential in the property from the moment they opened the front door. “We fell in love with it immediately,” he recalls. “It was an older property, with character, and although we have refurbished it, we have tried to retain that here and there, where possible.”

Special Touches
The work to transform Lily Cottage saw the couple carry out a major extension to the ground floor. This enabled them to create a spacious, contemporary, open-plan kitchen, dining and living space. They also converted the attic and added a dormer to transform the top floor of the property in a beautiful master bedroom, with en suite cloakroom. At the end of the garden, they built a beautiful new summerhouse, which could have a variety of uses, from additional leisure and living space to a home office, studio or teenagers’ den. “We had a new roof put on the house, new floors and ceilings installed throughout and we landscaped the garden, so it is now all on one level,” he adds. “There are also lots of extra touches here, such as TV points for HDMI cables, a sprinkler system on the ground floor and electric skylight windows.”

Spectacular Space
To the front of the house is a welcoming drawing room, with a feature chimney breast in exposed red brickwork. “This is a nice quiet room, where we can relax in front of the television or, if we have friends of family over, the children can settle in here in front of a film while everyone else is through in the main part of the house,” says Callum. Lily Cottage then opens up to reveal its crowning glory, the splendid kitchen, dining and living space, complete with chic, fitted kitchen, with breakfast bar, and comfortable seating area beside bi-folding door that pull right back on to the terrace. “This is where we spend most of our time,” he admits. “In the warmer weather, we keep the doors open and there is a nice flow out into the garden.”

Indoor-Outdoor Living
Great attention to detail has been afforded to the whole house, including the impressive kitchen. Here work surfaces are in 30mm marble-effect quartz and there is a Smeg range-style oven and fridge-freezer. While Callum and Laura have chosen to create a comfortable seating and television area at the end of the room, new owners could, of course, opt for a dining table instead. Beyond the kitchen, is an outside seating and entertaining area. “This has been excellent when we have had family and friends here during fine weather.”

Summer Days
Stairs from the drawing room lead up to the first floor of Lily Cottage, past another expanse of characterful red brickwork. This floor then accommodates two beautiful bedrooms, as well as the gorgeous family bathroom, with Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware, Vado taps, a bath and double walk-in shower. Another flight of stairs heads up to the second floor of the property, home to the splendid master bedroom and en suite cloakroom. “This room has sash windows to the front and French windows to the rear that open on to a Juliet balcony,” Callum explains. “In the summer, when all the windows are opened up, a wonderful breeze passes right through.”

Happy Times
Callum and Laura have enjoyed nothing more than relaxing quietly at Lily Cottage. At the same time, it has offered them great convenience, with its proximity to Ascot High Street and the train station. “We have also enjoyed being able to walk over to Ascot Heath,” he says. “I have to travel a lot for work and find it easy to pick up the motorways and get into London. We enjoy living here and do plan to stay in Ascot.” The couple, whose plan was to make Lily Cottage their long-term family home, agree they are sad to be leaving. “We put a great deal of effort into this house,” Callum reflects. “We have so many happy memories of being here and we have really enjoyed being part of such a friendly, local community.”

Setting the scene
Lily Cottage has a driveway to the front, to the rear, it opens on to a long garden, with outdoor living and entertaining area, as well as a summerhouse, with cloakroom, which could have variety of uses.
