Its origins date back to 1787 when the Duke of Chartres, father of Louis-Philippe, had an exotic garden designed near the village of Monceau, then outside Paris.

The landscape designers Carmontelle and Blaikie imagined unusual greenery, filled with artificially restored natural reliefs: rivers, rocks, caves. Today, a basin surrounded by ruined columns, the ancient colonnade of Naumachie, still remains. In 1793, the Park was joined by the Octroi building of the Farmers General.
