Balerno has some necessity shops and other services such as a Post Office, restaurants, a library and pubs. It also hosts a regular Farmer's Market. For the most part, residents' shop in the large supermarkets on the south west side of the city. The highly regarded Dean Park Primary and Balerno High Schools are both within the catchment area. There is excellent recreational walking along the Water of Leith and in the Pentland Hills, golf at the Dalmahoy Golf and Country Club, riding at the Pentland Hills Trekking Centre and the Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend offers the second longest dry ski slope in Europe. Public transport services include a regular bus service and a main line train link from neighbouring Currie into the City Centre. Access to the City Bypass that connects to the main roads and motorways north and south and to Edinburgh International Airport is straight forward.
