Situation
Oak House is in the settlement of Venton in the parish of Drewsteignton and it is on a south facing site within the Dartmoor National Park about half a mile from Whiddon Down. The ancient Stannary town of Chagford is approximately 3 miles away where there is a wide range of day to day and specialist shops, a primary school, pre school and Montessori, pubs, cafes and restaurant. There are surgeries for doctor, dentist and vet. In nearby Whiddon Down is a pub, petrol station and shop. The A30 dual carriageway is less than 2 miles away and Exeter is approximately 18 miles.

From Fowlers drive down out of The Square into Southcombe Street and then Lower Street leaving the town past the primary school and fire station. Continue to the crossroads with the A382 and turn left. Pass the Mill End Hotel and Sandy Park Inn and go up the steep hill and carry on for about three quarters of a mile at which point you come to the bottom of Venton Straight. Drive along Venton Straight and after about three quarters of a mile on the left is an old lay by. Drive past the first entrance to the lay by and turn into it at the upper entrance. The gated access to Oak House is just inside the turning.

    This beautiful North East corner of Dartmoor is the softer side of the moor and has two attractive principal towns just four miles apart from each other.  Both have vibrant thriving communities and superb ranges of amenities as well as great access to countryside, moorland and riverside walks.  They have a good variety of day to day and specialist shops, doctors, dentists and veterinary surgeries, churches, chapels, pubs, hotels, cafes and restaurants.  Each has a primary school and pre school and in the case of Chagford there is a Montessori as well.  Both have super fast broadband.  Chagford was voted best small town to live in rural Britain in the Spring of 2015 by the Sunday Times.  There are also picturesque villages such as Drewsteignton, Throwleigh, Gidleigh, South Zeal, South Tawton and North Bovey and numerous other smaller rural settlements in the area.  This part of Dartmoor enjoys a slightly drier climate, sheltered as it is by the higher moor to the North West, yet it has beautiful lush valleys, rounded hills and peaceful weathered granite tors.  Major shops are just 15-20 miles away in Exeter.
