Local area

East Harptree is a small village and civil parish in Somerset, just off the B3114 and less than a mile from its neighbouring West Haprtee; the villages are known locally as 'The Harptrees'. East Harptree is situated approximately 10 miles north of Wells and 12 miles south of Bristol, on the northern slope of the Mendip Hills overlooking the Chew Valley. The parish has a population of circa 644 and includes the hamlet of Coley.

The village mainly comprises of pretty red stone built cottages and houses along the main 'High Street' and benefits from a popular pre-school, primary school, community shop, village hall/club, village pub The Waldergrave Arms and late 12th century Grade II* listed Church of St Laurence. Neighbouring West Harptree has a fantastic deli shop with post office, butchers and bakery with New Manor Farm shop just a short distance further on at Bishop Sutton. West Haprtree also has a doctors surgery and dispensery.

The nearby Harptree Combe is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and slightly further southwest towards Priddy are the Lamb Leer Cavern and Wurt Pit and Devil's Punchbowl SSSIs. The nearest shop is located in West Harptree with bakery, butchers and Post Office, while New Manor Farm Shop is located just outside of Bishop Sutton on the road towards West Harptree [2 miles] and has a butchers and tea room offering light lunches, afternoon tea with a large selection of homemade cakes and Sunday roasts.

Public bus transport to Bristol runs Monday to Saturday with other once weekly services to Bath, Keynsham, Weston-super-Mare, Radstock and Wells. Train stations are located in Bristol [13miles], Bath [15 miles], Weston-super-Mare [17 miles] and Keynsham [11 miles].

The wider Chew Valley and surrounding areas are well known for offering an excellent variety of sporting and leisure activities and is a popular area for mountain biking; hiking/rambling; caving/rock climbing; fishing; bird watching and sailing. Chew Valley Lake, an important site for wildlife and wild fowl, has been dedicated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area. The Salt n Malt fish cafe, tearoom & takeaway at the picnic site, which is owned and run by Josh and Holly Eggleton of the Michelin stared local pub The Pony & Trap, is situated in an idyllic spot on the edge of Chew Valley Lake. Neighbouring Blagdon Lake also offers fishing and has a Victorian pumping station and Visitor Centre which includes science and environment exhibits and hands-on displays. There are leisure and sport centres at Chew Stoke, Winford, Midsomer Norton and Farrington Gurney and golf courses at Farrington Gurney and Wells.

For those who prefer something slightly less energetic the cities of Bristol and Bath offer an excellent selection of shops ranging from high street chains to more bespoke designer outlets for that little bit of retail therapy. If you are in the Roman City of Bath and fancy a different kind of therapy after a hard day's shopping, then a trip to the Thermae Bath Spa is a must for a pamper session and cup of tea!
