Description

Stourbank House is a most impressive period residence, the original part of which is believed to date from the late 18th century. The house was extended in keeping with the original in both the 1950’s and the 1990’s and now offers excellent family accommodation with a versatile layout that could be arranged to suit a buyer’s needs. In the last five years, the house has been the subject of a sympathetic and comprehensive programme of refurbishment to a very high standard. This truly stunning home must be viewed to fully appreciate the exceptional quality of the finish and the unique riverside setting.

The accommodation includes a delightful reception hall with chequerboard tiled floor and a most elegant sweeping staircase with hardwood handrail, reputedly built in 1820, and a guest cloakroom. The exquisite double drawing room has an open fireplace and features three pairs of French doors opening on to a verandah with lovely views across the river. The dining room also has French doors and river views, and there is a good size study. The kitchen/ breakfast room has been stylishly fitted with an excellent range of cabinetry and integrated appliances plus a gas fired Aga. Steps lead down to the generous family room with log burner, French doors to the walled garden and also doors to a delightful conservatory with utility room leading off. There is a useful lower ground floor comprising a wine cellar, boiler room, laundry room and several stores. On the first floor are the principal suite of bedroom with river views, dressing room and luxurious period style bathroom with freestanding slipper bath and separate shower, guest bedroom with en suite shower room, three further bedrooms, one arranged as a large gymnasium, and a superb family bathroom with freestanding bath, shower and twin basins. There is mains gas fired central heating.

Within the grounds is a charming former coach house, Stourbank Cottage which has also been attractively refurbished. It includes a sitting/ dining room, fitted kitchen with oven and hob, shower room, two first floor bedrooms and a garage used for garden machinery.

Outside
Stourbank House enjoys an impressive approach through high electrically operated iron gates on attractive stuccoed pillars. The sweeping shingle driveway leads to a parking and turning area in front of the house and also to the open fronted oak frame ‘Heritage’ style garage with timber elevations under a tiled roof.

The mature gardens and grounds are a particular feature extending in all to about 1.4 acres, enjoying direct frontage to the River Stour of about 100 yards with Fishing Rights. A large lawn slopes down to the river, with steps to a platform for boating or fishing. The gardens have been beautifully tended and are well stocked with herbaceous plants, mature trees and shrubs. To the side and rear is a secluded partly walled garden with large terrace perfect for outdoor entertaining. Within the garden are several brick stores, timber sheds, wood shed and greenhouse.

The northern part of the plot is arranged as woodland garden, separated by a fine yew hedge. It contains trees and shrubs including flowering cherries, camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas which, together with Spring bulbs provide colour throughout the year, and is a haven for wildlife.
