Swiss Cottage is like something out of a fairytale.
The Grade II-listed thatched cottage was built in 1850 as a summer house by Lord Barrington of Beckett Park, who wanted to replicate the honeymoon accommodation he had previously enjoyed in Switzerland.
It is nestled like a woodland grotto among the trees surrounding its private third-of-an-acre plot in the village of Shrivenham on the outskirts of Swindon.
The property has two ground floor bedrooms and a further one upstairs off the galleried landing, with other features including cut timber beams, diamond glazing throughout and gabled thatched roofing.
The cottage, which was reportedly the inspiration for the ‘Woodman’s Retreat’ model of the popular Lilliput Lane series of collectable models, also boasts a private driveway, manicured front garden and an out-building.
There is planning permission for an extension including a master bedroom with en-suite bathroom on the ground floor, and an open plan living and kitchen area with an external sunken patio on the lower ground floor.
