Last week, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show graced London once again with its colourful displays of cutting-edge garden design.

Revered as the most prestigious flower show in the UK, it has been running since 1913 and is the place for green fingered visitors to see the latest trends in garden design, buy new plants and seed ideas to take home.

Brits love their gardens, and spend huge amounts on perfecting them. For anyone selling their property it’s wise to spruce up your garden, balcony or roof terrace, as buyers will more often than not take a keen interest in the outside space.

OnTheMarket.com looks at five properties with examples of beautiful, green gardens.

1. Siddington, Cirencester, Gloucestershire (£1,599,000 Knight Frank, Cirencester)

Gravelled pathways: The garden has been finished to make it easy to maintain

You won’t need to worry about stocking up on gardening tools with this first property, as it has been finished to ensure the ample garden is easy to maintain. Roberts House is an attractive Grade II Listed Cotswold house situated on the edge of the village of Siddington, about two miles from the centre of Cirencester, a thriving market town in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The property is believed to date back to the 16th Century but has been extended and improved over time. The general size of the property has evolved to suit modern day living whilst retaining much charm and character. The rooms have good ceiling heights, and considering the age of the property, the rooms are particularly light, with an excellent reception room featuring stone fireplaces. The bedroom accommodation is laid out over two floors. There is a master bedroom with en-suite and dressing room, with views over the adjacent unspoilt countryside. There are a further five double bedrooms and a spacious sitting room.

2. Old Mill Lane, Sheet, Petersfield (£1,200,000 Winkworth, Petersfield)

Pond life: The garden has a mill pond and looks over the river

This next property is perfect for any budding horticulturist. With a range of perennial foliage, residents can enjoy the garden all year round. An enchanting period mill house on the banks of the River Rother, yet only 1.2 miles from Petersfield High Street and train station, the second property possesses an ideal location.

It was converted into a residence in 1937, and since then the owners have carried out many improvements, whilst preserving original period features. The bedrooms are all doubles, with the master having an en-suite. Additional rooms include: a study, sizeable drawing room, a dining/family room, kitchen, and beautiful garden/breakfast room in which you can open up the concertina doors during summer, or cosy up to the open fire in winter.

3. Fersfield, Nr Diss, Norfolk (£695,000 Jackson-Stops & Staff , Norwich)

Exposed beams: The property has maintained some of its original features

The next property’s garden was designed by Julie Toll – winner of several gold medals at the Royal Chelsea Flower Show – and is one of Cornfield Hall’s standout features. The grounds are arranged in various garden compartments and can be enjoyed throughout the year with wonderful trees, gravelled walks, a pond, and a summerhouse, which overlooks a parterre landscaped garden. The clever planting has resulted in a sensational English country garden and requires relatively little maintenance.

The house itself is a wonderfully converted Grade II Listed thatched barn, finished to a very high standard, with five bedrooms, and a kitchen/breakfast room positioned to take full advantage of the gardens and light. Cornfield Hall is approached through impressive gates leading you through to a long gravelled pathway in front of the house, with additional parking in the double garage.

4. Malton (£425,000 Cundalls, Malton)

Lush: The lawn is a generous size and is bordered by a variety of foliage

Holmgarth is a handsome Edwardian property located in one of Malton’s most sought after residential areas, within easy reach of the town centre and local schools. The house is understood to have been built around 1918 and is constructed of brick under a rosemary tile roof. Over the years the property has received several improvement works including re-roofing and re-wiring, and now provides very spacious family accommodation with numerous original features and a fantastic, south-facing garden.

Three of the four reception rooms directly overlook the garden at the rear of the house, whilst at the front there is a re-fitted breakfast kitchen and living room as well as a cloakroom and utility. Upstairs there is a house bathroom and a total of five bedrooms arranged over two floors, one of which has an en-suite shower room. The total plot is approaching one quarter of an acre and includes plenty of space to park along with a single garage. The bulk of the garden is on the south side and has been beautifully landscaped with formal lawn, borders and a productive vegetable patch at the far end.

Walled garden: The property shares its grounds with Sheffield Park House

The last property, although still boasting a great garden, would be more suitable for the less horticulturally inclined buyer, as it sits within the grounds of Sheffield Park House and therefore the gardens are maintained. Available to rent, in a quiet rural location, this house makes for a brilliant family home.

Residents benefit from ample outdoor space with two garages and a tennis court. The property comprises four double bedrooms, with the principal having an en-suite bathroom. The kitchen has been recently refurbished to include marble surfaces and tiled flooring.
