Following the general election, OnTheMarket.com looks at six properties in constituencies around the country which can be bought on earnings of £67,060.

MPs have been known to grumble about their salaries. However, bearing in mind they earn a basic annual salary of £67,060 – comfortably more than twice the national average – with today’s generous mortgages on offer, tax-free expenses and pensions that they also benefit from, they’re not going to be living in a tin shed any time soon. So what can you buy or rent on a salary of about £67,000 assuming a budget in the case of a purchase in the region of up to £300,000?

1. Mill Street, Wells, Somerset (£295,000 Jeanes Holland Burnell, Wells)

Plenty of natural light: Bedroom one has double glazed windows to the front and rear with a view of Wells Cathedral

First past the post is this delightful townhouse in the constituency of Wells in Somerset. It was built in 2011, so the design and appliances are modern and up-to-date. Described as an ideal “lock up and leave” property – well suited for those with responsibilities or residences elsewhere – it has three bedrooms, spread over three floors, all with double glazed windows. Outside there is a covered parking area with access to a secure store, and a canopied porch.

2. Silverhill Road, Willesborough, Ashford (£299,950 Martins Estates, Ashford)

The constituency office of Damian Green, the MP for Ashford in Kent, is based just a 20-minute drive away from property number two, which might be perfect for him and his family with three lovely bedrooms, a sizeable garden and plenty of storage. A converted basement contains a family room with open plan kitchen and integrated appliances. The three double bedrooms are found on the middle and top floors, with the master bedroom benefiting from an en-suite shower. The whole property has double glazing and there is private off-road parking on a paved driveway in front of the house.

3. Blackburn Road, Heapey, Chorley (£259,000 Regan & Hallworth, Parbold)

The Willows is a charming three bedroom house, full of character and offering tranquillity on a quiet street. Built in 1900, the property’s original features still remain, with elegant high ceilings, original entrance door and mosaic floor tiles. The house has been carefully thought out to make the most of its space, so that the first floor landing, often overlooked as a place to utilise, has been turned into a library area. It also leads to the loft which has great potential to develop. The garden is south facing and has sweeping views of the open countryside. The location means residents can enjoy an array of village pubs, great schools, beautiful walks and there is a David Lloyd Leisure Club nearby.

4. Beckenham (£300,000 Allen Heritage, Beckenham)

It’s safe to say that you get more for your money the further outside of London you go. Not quite Number 10 in terms of location but tucked away in an attractive quiet corner of Beckenham. This property is a two bedroom bungalow. Transport is almost on the doorstep with five local stations. The house overlooks a private garden and has off-street parking, giving a secluded feel to the accommodation.

5. Theddon, Farnham, Basingstoke, Hampshire (£1,850pcm The Country House Company, Hambleden)

Greenery: The house has large gardens to the front and back

The final property would do well in any opinion poll. It’s a very attractive and well presented four bedroom brick and flint cottage, located deep in the countryside with pleasant views of Hampshire’s green fields. The gardens are immaculate and enclosed by a traditional brick wall. Inside, there are two reception rooms, both of a good size, a large kitchen/breakfast room, four double bedrooms and a utility room. Families can enjoy the Jet Master fireplace, which creates a lovely atmosphere during winter, and the ample outdoor space is perfect for frolicking in the sun.

6. South Street, Newbottle, Houghton-le-Spring (Offers over £300,000 Hegartys, Houghton-le-Spring)

Classic: The kitchen is finished to a very high standard with cream classic style colouring

Last but certainly by no means least, this property is both immaculate and great value for money. Boasting four double bedrooms, two of which have en-suites, our last property has a lot to offer in terms of space and design. Having recently been refurbished, the bedrooms, kitchen, bathrooms and living room are all finished to a very high standard and have a unique style. The house also has a good sized garden with courtyard, plenty of parking space and a double garage.
