With links to smugglers, just under an acre of land and views towards the sea, who can resist this ultimate DIY project?

Spout House Cottage needs a complete renovation and is not for the faint-hearted but its potential is easy to see.

Spout House Cottage is on sale for £600,000 and is marketed by Hobbs Parker – Ashford, via OnTheMarket.

The house dates back to the 16th century when great numbers of smugglers roamed
Kent’s Romney Marsh. It is said to be named after the ‘spouted oil lamp’ used by smugglers to signal warnings of horseback patrols at night.

Surrounded by beech, ash and sycamore trees in Lympne, near Folkestone in Kent, the house could become the perfect retreat for the right owner.

It has two bedrooms with sufficient roof space for a third. It overlooks Portus Lemanis, a Roman maritime fort, a few hundred yards away.

Bursting with history and character, this property is incredibly unique. There is even a carving of a skull in a stone wall which is said to mark a smuggler’s demise!

One thing to bear in mind: it can only be accessed by foot.
