Forming part of the conversion of a Bryant and May match factory is this one-bedroom mezzanine apartment in Bow, east London.

This property is on sale for £325,000 and is marketed by Butler & Stag, Bow, via OnTheMarket.

Dating back to 1861, the factory was first established by William Bryant and Francis May to produce safety matches and eventually became the biggest factory in London. By 1911, the factory employed over 2,000 women and girls, and the famous London matchgirls’ strike of 1888 began there which led to reforms in match production being introduced a few years later that prevented the use of toxic elements.

To commemorate the role social activist Annie Besant had during this time in demanding better pay and conditions, a blue plaque sits proudly outside the entrance. The factory eventually closed in 1979 and in 1988 the site became one of east London’s first urban renewal projects and now the factory building still stands as residential flats.

Today, this one-bedroom apartment has been beautifully refurbished and enjoys high ceilings, exposed brickwork, and large windows which allow plenty of natural light to flood through each space. The development also benefits from lots of luxurious facilities including a resident only swimming pool, gym, roof terrace, convenience store, and 24-hour concierge.

Located just off Fairfield Road, the Bow Quarter Development is perfectly placed for easy access to shops, cafes, markets, and green spaces such as Victoria Park and Grove Hall Park. Transport links connected to the Central Line and DLR are also nearby allowing for easy commutes into Canary Wharf, The City and West End.
