Local knowledge

Living in Stevenage

Stevenage is a modern ‘new town’ originally developed for housing Londoners after the Second World War. Now with a population exceeding 80,000, this lively town offers something for everyone.

Stevenage originated as a Saxon Village, although increased evidence is coming to light of previous Roman settlements. By 1086, when William the Conqueror’s Domesday survey was made, the Saxons had a village named ‘Stigenence’ built on a hill where the beautiful ‘St Nicholas Church’ stands today.

Over the centuries, Stevenage developed into a busy market town with many local farmers selling their produce in what is now known as the High Street, where Putterills' office stands today. The High Street became the main road from the north to London and many old coaching Inns still exist where Charles Dickens often frequented! Today, the Old town retains much charm and character with cobbled streets, quirky shops and some beautiful old buildings, many listed.
