DESCRIPTION
Park House was built in 1960, designed by Claud Phillimore, for Bernard, 16th Duke of Norfolk and his wife Lavinia. The property sits within Arundel Park and is surrounded by its' own gardens extending to over 20 acres. The gardens were designed by Lanning Roper who later worked on Prince Charles' garden at Highgrove.
The entrance drive leads from a private Estate road through a pair of stone pillars. The property was designed in the Palladian style on the basis of a main residence with two flanking wings. Several nautical touches recall the proximity of the sea including porthole windows in the links to the cottages. There is an Admiral's walk on the roof of the main house, built in order to watch the racehorses gallop in the Park.
The interior of the house was designed to be comfortable but still with an air of grandeur. The property was decorated by John Fowler who, like Lanning Roper, often collaborated with Claud Phillimore. The drawing room and dining room are placed together and occupy the whole garden facade; both have bow ends and are linked by double doors that can be opened up for parties. The drawing room walls were covered with duck egg blue silk which has faded pleasantly to a pale greenish hue since it was hung. The dining room can seat up to 14 for dinner and is decorated with a green French flock wallpaper. The library has bookshelves in segmental arched recesses on the end wall. A dummy door contains titles commemorating the construction of the house.
